How come I need a 9 tog duvet and ds only has a 2.5 tog grobag. Should he have a blanket too?

Ailsa I also have a Gro-bag from Mothercare, DS loves it, although I never know whether to put blanket on top especially in this cold weather. We don't keep the heating on at night either. So difficult to judge how warm they are. DS's hands are always icy in the morning.

fleecy gloves.....

Grobag users - my grobag just arrived today. Or rather my daughter's - they didn't stock them in my size.

Do you ever use blankets with them? And do you put your baby's in them to nap, as well as at night? I don't know why I feel there woud be a difference....

No to blankets unless it's a very cold night, in which case I put a thin fleece blanket over him (he's two now) and yes, in his bag for naps too. He loves his bag and it's a real sleep cue for him.

I have my ds in a 2.5 tog grobag except in the hottest summer weather when we have a cotton one but he doesn't like that as much. When it is really cold (I'm in the northeast too!) we put pyjamas on him and do use blankets too. I think he's like me and likes to be really snug at night! We don't have the heating on at night as I don't like my head getting too hot at night, so just use big duvet and jamas - he normally this winter has had grobag plus a cellular blanket, though sometimes he wants his quilt too and he doesn't seem to get too hot (not v.dangerous at this age anyway, I believe). He can undo the zip, but only does so when he gets up.

I use it for naps too. One of the advantages of the grobag is they associate it with sleep. They didn't do the travel ones with car seat strap holes when I bought mine, so I've cut and hemmed a hole in one of the two we've got, at the bottom of the zip, so if we go out for dinner we can pop him straight in the car from his travel cot when its time to go home. But if you're buying now, jojomamanbebe do a lovely denim one with detachabl sleeves and a car seat strap slot - we got one for some friends recently. Its £30, but good value as its the 18-4 size with poppers to fold back to the 6-18 month size. (not connected with the company, just impressed!).

They have them in TK Maxx for £9.99 if it helps anyone.

There's some gorgeous ones in the new Vertbaudet catalogue. Doesn't state the Tog so I'm going to phone them to check. THere's some nice pretty ones and also plain functional onces, inc removemable sleeves.

Help!!! My dd at 22 months has almost grown out of the sleeping bag that was supposed to last until at least 24 months (she is 95th %ile height). Now I'm wondering whether and how to try and find a bigger one. Am in NZ where they are not common so am thinking I might make one! Any tips on how to get the right weight and what design feature are preferable? E.g zip on side or front? I have had a preference for the side zip as I think it is more comfortable (no risk of scratching under chin) but she has started to undo the poppers on the shoulders so maybe a front zip with no poppers would be better? Can anyone help????

Davros · 26/01/2004 21:51

I like a side zip as the front ones on Grobags are a pain when they're guzzling milk and you're trying to do it up (the zip's upside down though so no scratching). I don't like the "braces" things with poppers like on the Mothercare ones as I thought they poked in her face. So, my verdict is side zip, no shoulderstraps with poppers. Send me one! or at least show us a photo when its done

aloha · 26/01/2004 22:06

Grobag do them and sell them online. Don't know if they ship to NZ.

buzzybee · 27/01/2004 01:50

Davros - not sure what you mean by the "braces". My lovely current one has two poppers on each shoulder, but dd is now "popping" these herself. Had one in the past without poppers and it was always a struggle to "dress" her in it (putting arms through holes) when she was lying down. So quite keen to keep the top fastening but has anyone got one with more secure fastening than poppers? Also how do I make sure it is the right weight/warmth?
Aloha - as a last resort I might get one by mail order, but kind of hoping to avoid that!
