Any ideas where I can get an everyday dinner set from?

Our everyday dinner set has seen better days and I want a new one.

Don't want to spend a fortune!

We have a posh one for when anyone comes round, so something cheap but tasteful to use for the family is what I'm after!

ANy ideas???

TIA!

Ikea? Nice plain bog standard white service.

Woolworths, bhs

Whittards seem to constantly have a sale on plates/bowls and stuff. Nice bright colours too.

Do you know that Tesco do pretty good mugs and I think they also do dinner services

Or Ikea (if you happen to be close

I was looking at the boxed sets in Sainsbury's at the w/e - very attractive plain white - I was impressed. And so cheap. But look more expsnisve, as if they had come from John Lewsi. Who also do a good basic set.

ARGOS-lots of clearance offers here this is only £6.00!

soapbox · 07/11/2005 14:24

Soupy - Ikea stuff is great, but the queues turn me into a mad axe murderer

My last set came from Tescos (in the sale at that £12 for a complete set for 4)!

Woolworths is a good idea - I've also just looked on Argos and they have some!

Whittards also good suggestion but I have mugs from there which have chipped really easily, so I'm not sure how well the plates would fare!

We've just got rid of all the plastic children's plates so they'll be using them too, so whatever I get has to be robust

Asda has a lovely 'set' ATM. It's loose, not a set, IYSWIM. Very plain design, white on the outside and one colour inside, but available in IIRC yellow, blue, red, green, orange(?), so you could have matching design with different colours. Only trouble (and the reason that I haven't bought any) is that they're quite bulky to stack and we're short on storage space.

Got all excited there Fimbo - really liked it, but is out of stock at all our local stores - grrrr!

I will try sainsburys and tescos - also maybe Matalan???

I like the Argos one, but nowhere in Greater Manchester has any left in stock!

Fimbo · 07/11/2005 14:37

LOL - isn't it typical, I have checked all my local stores and they are out of stock too!

bossykate · 07/11/2005 18:02

MaryBS · 08/11/2005 20:02

If you're in London, there's a seconds store in Camden ... the Reject Pot Shop? Something like that. (I'll dig up details if anyone wants.)

They have seconds of unpainted white crockery, each piece is £1 or so, and really lovely and simple. They sometimes have surface imperfections. But they're really nice, and big, and good quality. (Brands like Portmeiron are there - just unpainted.)

I've only lived in Stoke for 6 months and already threads like this get my blood running

british made generally really is worth the money as they are often less chip-y and of course you are supporting skilled craftspeople... limiting the travel miles etc etc... (so don't buy wedgwood or worcester that's all made in china now).

And of course if you live near here, you can get spode, dudson etc for less than 50p a piece in the factory shops...
