bikes with no pedals

Did anyone see the article about some German bikes with no pedals in the Saturday Times a couple of weeks ago ? the theory was that the little one whizzed about getting used to the balance concept so when they went on to a normal bike the only new thing was pedalling. They were pricey but I wanted to look at the web site but lost the article (I think it was sat 15th Sept) and the Times web site can't show 2001 back issues so any info on it would be great.
thanks

It was called LIKEaBIKE. I think they look great.

Cawthorne · 03/10/2001 00:52

Suew thanks for the tip, that might be the answer since the actual LikeaBike is about £150. I found a website thanks to Croppy remembering the name - just need to find one in english now. I think the theory sounds great and certainly all the write ups recommend it - has anyone tried one ?

A German friend recommended using a scooter first to develop balance. We tried this when our youngest son just couldn't cope with a bike. Six months later he taught himself to ride his bike in about 5 minutes flat.

Nancemellan1 · 06/01/2006 12:29

I recently bought one of these for my little boy and they are brilliant! He already has his balance and absolutely whizzes everywhere - revolutionizes going for a walk! We did a lot of research and found www.helemill.com was the cheapest - also very good customer service

Is this a sneaky advert? Seems odd to revive a 4 year old thread like this ...

Gizmo · 06/01/2006 12:35

Well it could be, but I got a german version (via Ebay) for ds for xmas which he adores and which makes walking into town a whole lot quicker.

Not advertising, just gloating

Gizmo, I meant it seemed a bit odd for a first-time poster to revive a thread from 2001 in order to add a website address to the thread.

Suspicious minded, you see ...

Pollyanna · 06/01/2006 12:55

I also got one off ebay for about £35 I think - much cheaper than the link posted below - they're not original likeabikes, but look very similar.

Prettybird · 17/01/2006 16:40

Lidl are selling them for £29.95!

Blu · 17/01/2006 16:43

Prettybird, thank you! Will look there rather than reviving posters website!
I do think they look a great way to introducing kids to rinding a bike - better than stabilisers or walking bent double in the park for 3 weeks!

Prettybird · 17/01/2006 16:45

Saw them on Sunday - so hopefully they will still be there. But you know what Lidl is like - once they are out of stcok, that's it.

it's the second time in recent months that they've had them though, so they may well be in again soon.

Lio · 17/01/2006 16:55

Ooh, good tip Prettybird, I might make a special trip to Lidl tomorrow. Was SO cross with myself for missing the Tchibo one.

Prettybird · 17/01/2006 16:58

They're not actaully shoing on the Lidl website, so it doesn't look like they are a currant offer. Maybe it was jsut that my local store had some still in stock? WOuld hate to have loads of Mumsnetters getting their hopes up in vain.

Lio · 17/01/2006 17:03

I rang Lidl and I think you got lucky Prettybird, as they are not supposed to be selling that at the moment ? woman I spoke to said they were selling it June. Don't suppose your local store is near north London/Herts...

IlanaK · 17/01/2006 17:03

We have one for ds1. He has outgrown it now and we have ordered a normal bike for him. But I would highly recommend them. We got ours from Tichbo for about £25 a few years ago. They seem to do them every now and again.

Prettybird · 17/01/2006 17:14

Ddin't actually buy one as a) we already have a Like-a-Byke (the expensive version) and b) ds is now cycling his bike without stabilisers (but still ikes to go on his "flying bike" as he calls it, occasionally, as he can go so much faster on it).

If they've still got any when i go back on Thursday, does anyone want me to get it?

My store is in Glasgow BTW.

misdee · 17/01/2006 17:17

local store here had them (wam in herts) last week. was debating on getting dd2 one.

prettybird · 21/01/2006 14:49

My local Lidl (Newlands, southside of Glasgow) has loads of them, for £29.95.

I could get one and post it if anyone wants one.

prettybird · 30/01/2006 12:05

Just to mention again that my Lidl (in Glasgow) still has plenty of these bikes, as of Satruday.

They were doing a stock take though -not sure if that means that they'll then "retrun" them to some central point.

WellINever1 · 17/12/2023 17:16

This aged well....now balance bikes are ubiquitous!
