Really need to reduce my bills - does anyone have any of those re-routers that you plug in to the phone socket? or can recommend any companies such as bulldog, they are brilliant apparently but we are outside the catchment area of inner london. Thank you.

www.call18866.com and www.call1899.com

You have to dial a number before dialling your usual number (no rerouter box yet) but they are dirt cheap.

Read moneysavingexpert.com which will give you the latest cheapest method to make phone calls, as it's such a changing market. They constantly update and you can subscribe to an email which gives lots of useful help to save money elsewhere too.

18866 has halved my phone bill for the past 6 months

You don't need a router

aha have noticed they have sneakily put their charges up - you have to watch out as they were originally 1p connection, then 2p and now 3p, so not worth using for local calls off peak I should imagine

We've signed up to TalkTalk. Bills have plummetted.

We've got a plug in box with sundial (so no having to dial prefixes etc.) So much off local calls during the week, cheap overseas calls and FREE calls local ALL weekend. I've noticed a big difference in my bill.

We have got an NTL line, with a deal that includes all calls to UK land lines all the time. Think it is £20 per month for phoneline, calls and basic cable package. We then use pay as you go mobiles for all calls to mobiles (as these are extra and expensive with NTL). This means you tend to keep the calls to mobiles short and sweet.

CD, BT's min call charge is 5p even if you only get an answer machine so 18866 still cheaper even at 3p.

1899 cheaper than 18866 for mobiles and international.

Oh, and - v important, I only found this out recently - 0870 calls are about 1.5p at weekends, vs 8p weekdays, so call then if you have to (places that use 0870 often quieter at weekends too.)

(Or check number on say no to 0870 which will often have a geographical number you can call using 18866 instead, or an 0800 number.)

I used a phone box the other day for the first time in years and it was 30P MINIMUM CHARGE!!!

JanH · 31/10/2005 12:09

(Our phone calls now cost only about £3 per month with BT (+ line rental of course) and £10 - £15 per month total with 18866 and 1899.)

get a mike for your computer and start using Skype - its fantastic! You can call online mates for free, anywhere in the world, or you can phone landlines and mobiles for a little over a penny a minute. Very very quick and easy to set up too.
