Meitai carriers

I hope you will be able to click on this link and tell me if this type of carrier is any good?

Its my second child, I'm expecting, and first time I tried a few different slings, but sold them on ebay or have lent them out.

I just thought this looked quite good - could you let me know if you've had one and what it was like?

Thanks.

Oh - thank you!!!

I'm 37 weeks now and more than ever forgetful.

Here it is: cgi.ebay.co.uk/Meitai-baby-carrier-sling-embroidery-/160538733168?pt=UK_Baby_Carriers&hash=item2560daaa70

Personally I found Meitai type carriers better from 5/6 months, and prefer a stretchy wrap/Close carrier for a newborn.

OK. Thank you.

I have an ergo carrier that I really loved for DS. It was the only one out of all them I kept. And I'll be using that from 4 months onwards - so don't want to waste money on something that does the same job.

But - before - I had a hugabub sling and I found it unbearable. It was a real pain - for me - to tie and kept dropping down to my knees (with the baby in it). I know other people love these types of carriers, but it just didn't seem to work for me.

Has anyone got any other suggestions for a sling to carry a new born - 3 months in??

Have a look at a Close carrier - it's similar to a stretchy wrap but has rings so you don't have to tie it yourself (this is what appealed to me - I wasn't confident enough to have to tie anything!). You basically put it on, pull it tight and pop the baby in. I used mine pretty much everyday for the first 3 months and could wear it for hours without difficulty, I was very upset when ds got a bit big for it around 5/6 months.

I'm getting a malware warning from your link, so I can't look at it.

Mei Tai is a type of carrier rather than a brand name. Personally I would always buy a sling from a specialised sling website than off ebay, unless it was a recognised brand that I had heard of - there are a lot of copycats on ebay and badly made carriers which might be unsafe.

The hugabub dropped down to your knees? Shock no wonder it was uncomfortable! :) Do you still have it? It might be a tying error if you want to try again.

If you're just looking for something to use up to 4-5 months and you like the Ergo, a Wilkinet might be a good bet for you. I bought a second hand one on ebay last year for £11, but they aren't too expensive new either. I bought it too late really as DS was 9 months old but ended up lending it to a friend who used it until her DS was big enough for the Ergo and she loved it. It's good for newborns as it's such a small carrier. Looks similar to the baby bjorn etc, but has good sitting position for the baby. It's similar to a Mei Tai in that you have to tie the straps, but it doesn't stretch like a hugabub does so you might find it better. It's also smaller and slightly more structured than a Mei Tai.

RitaMorgan · 02/04/2011 20:11

I also had a wilkinet when ds was little but gave it away - I found it a bit of a nightmare though with all the straps to tie while juggling a baby. Also didn't find the weight distribution as good as the Close carrier so not as comfortable.

mummynoseynora · 02/04/2011 20:14

I love mei tei slings, but for when baby is a little bigger - I personally recommend a moby style stretchy wrap any day for a newborn to around 6/7 months

btw- didn't even look on your link - got a malware warning

BertieBotts · 03/04/2011 10:00

The wilkinet is no harder to tie than a Mei Tai though, which is what the OP originally was looking at. In fact it's probably easier if you thread the straps through the loops first, as the baby's weight is then effectively held by them while you tie it properly. You can do it sitting down when they're tiny - nowhere to fall then :)

skewiff · 03/04/2011 16:38

Thank you everyone:-

I will look at the wilkinet - my friend did have one of these, I'll ask her if she still has it. But it looked a bit complicated to me, from what I remember - so if the Mei Tai is the same I won't get one of those.

The close carrier sounds good. Do you think the cheaper ones on Ebay are just copies then?

You can get 2nd hand close carriers cheap on ebay if that's what you mean?

BertieBotts · 03/04/2011 19:21

I was saying I'd only buy brand name carriers on ebay - so a close carrier would be fine. I wouldn't buy a generic "ring sling" or "mei tai" or something like that from ebay, if that makes sense.

skewiff · 03/04/2011 21:36

Ok that's good - I've seen some close carriers that are reasonably priced - hopefully ...

The Connecta is basically a MeiTai with clips instead of ties, if you're looking for an easier way to fasten. You can put a baby in from about 8lb seem to recall. They are about £60 new though.
