How dreadful for you! DS1 did something similar in a busy car park when we were on holiday, and I was shaking so much from shock (at what might have happened) I could hardly speak.

Have you looked on the web for links to Govt sites? I know they're running some sort of campaign (with hedgehogs?) I bet there's a book too? Sorry I haven't time to look right now - still at the office ( )

(Did you sell you FP garage??)

Maybe just a bit too old, but Michael Morpurgo's book "Cool" is about a boy who runs out into the road (after his dog) and gets knocked over by a car, and spends weeks unconscious on life-support in intensive care. It's a very moving book, and may be too much for a 5 yr-old, but you may want to take a look.

It's not so much about road safety, as the consequences of not following the rules.

We were given an excellent book when ds1 was at nursery - but have just looked and the cover has come off so I don't know the title. I know our local HV's also give out the same book so will try to find out some more info for you.

I don't know if Dick King-Smith's The Hodgeheg would be any good - can't remember details exactly but he gets hit by a car ("a head on the bang" - ie he starts talking funny after it!) and at least one of his parents gets squished, but eventually, IIRC, he learns to wait at the crossing until a human comes along and presses the button.

It might help...good luck - that awful awful feeling when you scream and they don't respond is gut-wrenching - so glad he was lucky.

Hi sb34, have you heard of the Children's Traffic Club? We were sent info about joining by Croydon Council. They send you 6 books full of interesting pictures to talk about, stories to read and activities to do. They have a website - www.TrafficClub.org .

I know how just you feel as I had a fright with ds recently - he was walking up our street with my Mother and I - I'd forgotten something and turned back to the house, when I got back to them my Mother was white and said he'd legged it up the road and took no notice of her shouting at him, she couldn't keep up with him and he ran straight over the road at the top and the next road too. I shudder now at the thought ...

My DD is 6y9mo and has taken to heart the road safety ad set to 'King of the Road'

Just because the light turns green,
Don't you be so overkeen,
You gotta stop, look and listen and you'll be
King of the Road'

Or something like that. Just a suggestion....

It's horrid when you have a shock on the road, isn't it? I help in school and one day saw a child from 'my class' out on his own - he was nearly 6, and he just ran straight across a busy/fast road to see me ... didn't look at all, didn't stop to think, just ran! I was horrified. Fortunately there wasn't an accident. I really shouted at him and told him off though. ... think it made quite an impression on my boys too, who were with me at the time!

Make your own! No seriously we have this to come with ds1 and I make my own for this sort of thing. They even have a name- social stories. Take some photos add some lines of text and hey presto.
