Tesco wooden track system

DaddyGhoul · 26/10/2005 08:24

We went to one of those Tesco 'extras' yesterday and they had a huge range of wooden tracks. you know they type - the traditial wood tracks that fit loosely together and come with magnet connecting trains.

Brio make the original type but they're deadly expensive. Ikea make a really cheap little set but the range is limited but Tesco seem to do a huge range of different tracks (turnstyles, crossing, high speed locomotives and loads of little trees and mountains)... at Ikea prices if not cheaper. excellent value for money. for about £20 I can double up DS's set and completely cover the front room in wooden tracking (to DW's delight LOL!)

Tchibo have a nice set on offer at the moment for £11.99....

misdee · 26/10/2005 08:44

the tesco tracks are brilliant. i must add some more to dd2 collection this xmas.

laughinglil · 26/10/2005 08:49

i was looking at the tchibo one the other day... still wondering what to do!

hoxtonchick · 26/10/2005 08:55

we got the tchibo one a couple of years ago, & added it to one from costco. both still going strong!

laughinglil · 26/10/2005 08:55

does the tesco ones look better?

highlander · 26/10/2005 12:07

my sister had the Tesco system and says it was/is fab!

Nemo666 · 26/10/2005 12:15

it is a great set..ds got it from pil for his bday couple of weeks ago and absolutely loves it. mil got him a station and train house etc all sorts of fab bridges for it..hours of fun.

laughinglil · 26/10/2005 12:17

what age do you think they would start to really enjoy it?

Nemo666 · 26/10/2005 12:24

laughinglil..ds was 2 and it was his bday present he had played with other peoples from around 19/20mths.

ediemaybeabat · 26/10/2005 12:25

My DS has loved his from 18m but has only really started building track since he was 2. The Tesco track fits the Brio, Thomas and most other sets.

KBear · 26/10/2005 12:26

My DS's favourite toy ever.

ASDA are doing a great set this year (got it last year for DS) about £10 - includes lots of track, bridges etc. Great value. Top tip - first time you put it together number the pieces then next time you can match them up and save lots of time. (Thanks for that Dad!).

laughinglil · 26/10/2005 12:33

my ds will be just over 20 months so think I might go and purchase one! if he doesn't like it isn't too much money spent... I think he will though loves vehicles!

DaddyGhoul · 26/10/2005 21:57

20mths sounds about right. I bought a little set from Ikea 6 months ago and i swear the he hasn't gone one single day without playing with this.

Tesco kit was seriously cool. the bit that got me was the 'high speed locomotives'. They are really detailed and flash looking and ds wouldn't let go of it between 4pm Tuesday to 7pm Wednesday!

We're off to buy the rest of the stuff some time this week and we'll give it to him for xmas.

the other kits are interesting to hear about. i wasn't aware tchibo, asda did these things.

beware the ikea kit. they don't quite fit the rest. i think the brio, tesco and other various non-brand name ones fit but the ikea one is slightly different (surprise surprise)and is a little loose on one end and little tight on the other... still works ok though.

ds has mostly Brio, with some ELC. He has played with it pretty solidly from the age of 2 and is now 6 1/2. I think it is a fantastic toy, and although the brio was expensive it is tough (actually I can't tell the difference with the ELC stuff now) and lasts a long long time. Also it is great to add to, so a good one for relatives at Christmas etc.

BadHair · 26/10/2005 23:28

We're overrun with wooden track too - started with the Asda set and used Tesco and ELC to add to it. It really is fab stuff - I play with it when dses are in bed. I pretend that I'm setting it up for them for tomorrow.

scaryclary · 26/10/2005 23:40

yeah, Ikea track is a bit cack. Tesco is fine tho and works OK with real Brio (we had some as presents).
I also got good bits from Sainsbury's and ELC do an own-brand version too.
Plus there is a little chap with a shop local to me who makes his own but that's no good to you....
All mine have loved it and ds1 (6) still plays with it beside his 2yo brother.

SoupDragon · 27/10/2005 08:40

The Tchibo one is instore now - and only £10.99 not £11.99 as it said in the catalogue/online.

nooka · 27/10/2005 17:09

ha ha yes, forgot to mention that bit. Great therapy. I like to sort all my son's track bits, and also to try and get those last few bits of the track so it's all joined together. In fact I think ds has so much mostly because dh and I enjoy playing with it. He has some Hornby too, and it's just not quite so nice to play with (something about wood, I think).

ajmum · 27/10/2005 17:15

What is the quality of Tchibo stuff like usually?

ScreamEagle · 27/10/2005 17:28

Can you use the Thomas Tank trains on the Tesco train track does anyone know?

HRHQoQ · 27/10/2005 17:32

The tesco one is fabulous - you can buy extra trains, and bits of track (from Tesco, ebay - and if you've got bootsales/second hand markets near you too they often sell them) to make it bigger.

DS1 got the basic oval one for his birthday (he's just turned 5 BTW!) from his best friend who has a LOT of the tesco tracks - and makes the most fantastic tracks with them.

hoxtonchick · 27/10/2005 18:12

i had a look at the tesco one today & it looks very good indeed.

tassis · 27/10/2005 18:26

Scream Eagle - I believe the wooden world thomas trains from ELC fit the wooden tracks and brio do thomas trains too.

My parents are going to buy ds the tesco set for his christmas but we'll have to put some thomas trains in his stocking because he looks at the tesco ones and says "uh-oh that trains not got a smile"

DaddyGhoul · 28/10/2005 13:08

we did it. we went out and bought £75 worth of tesco tracks. i was surprised. normally I would do this because I'm male and incapable of making logical decisions when it comes to spending money but DW was urging me on!! Bought loads... both mountain and town sets, turntable, drawbridge, freight trains, extra track... went to toy r us afterwards and bought james, thomas and annie and clarabel ... whatever, it'll fun playing with them (for ds of course )

the price of those thomas trains is ridiculous btw! £10 just for thomas on his own, £15 for james!... i couldn't help myself though.
