Induction Hob

Hi everyone, we have just moved house and need to buy a new cooker. I am really taken with the induction hobs but we have never cooked with one. Can anyone give us an opinion? We have used both gas and standard electric ceramic hobs before now and fancy the (supposed) cleanliness, ease of control and rapid heating of the induction hobs. All comments most welcome!

hmm is that like the flat glass ones?

if so we have one and i HATE it. anything that spills from a pan has to be cleaned asap or else it burns on and it difficult to get off. and obviously it's a pain to be cleaning up a hot ring in the middle of cooking!

took me ages to get used to how quickly it heated and i kept burning stuff too

doesn't it work out very expensive with special pans

but i thought it was supposed to be safe as feels cold to touch?

My friend has one, if we're talking about the magnetic thingie. I could be persuaded to change from gas for it, I like it so much. It's instantaneous, controllable and cools down almost at once. I think my friend just has ordinary stainless steel pans, nothing special.

Well I love mine!

Very controllable but they are not cold to the touch, they do get warm but will only turn on if in contact with stainless steel-small or large hands or even cat paws cannot turn the thing on.

It bouls a saucepan of water quicker than my kettle too.

As for pans, they just need to be stainless steel. It did cost us a bit when we changed from ceramic as I had lovely circulon pans which wouldn't work.A lot of pans now indicate on the label whether they are suitable for induction hobs.

Good lcuk with the decision!

We've had one now for about 5 years and yes, I love it. Easy to use, and what I particularly like about it is you also have extra workspace when it's not being used as a hob, invaluable in a small-ish kitchen such as ours. We are moving house, and will defo buy another one in our new house.

The only slightly negative thing I could say about it is that with toddlers, because there are no obvious signs it is a hob (like with a gas hob) you have to be ultra-careful that little hands do not reach up and touch the surface. That said, I guess you have to be pretty careful with all hobs, it's just that with induction hobs the hazards are not immediately obvious, ifyswim.

Thanks everyone, I think we will go for an induction hob. Now to plan the rest of the kitchen...? ;-)
