Our local city farm does some very good, very cheap sets, but I've thrown away the boxes so can't name the brand. But if you have a farm open to the public near you, it's a good place to start.

It's not quite a farm playset, but DS2 has a tractor + trailer with farmer + animals thing that is immensely popular. It's from John Lewis.

Oh, and we have a cheapo set from Asda that's nice enough.

woolies ones are very good for their low price.

For what age group Socci?

For younger children, I like the ELC Happyland one myself - ds2 LOVES carrying around all the animals (he's adopted the pig and sheep in particular).

For older children, agree that Woolies is pretty good value although I found that they weren't built as well. As I've still got the farm set I had as a kid, I'd probably err on the spending a bit more for higher quality materials so they lasted well.

Does depend on the age of the child. I was thinking about buying the ELC Happyland one for my nephew who will be 14 months at Christmas. DS who is 4, has a wooden board with fields etc plus loads of Brittains animals which were DH's, plus some of DH's vehicles (tractors, muckspreader, combine etc) plus some of his own vehicles. He has been playing with this combo regularly since he turned 3 and he is nearly 5. I reckon this has quite a lot of play left in it for him, especially when DD starts to join in constructively.

Playmobil is always brilliant, and can be combined with other playmobil sets too
