Conservatories - anyone got one?

I'd like to get one but I have a BIG but, can you really use them in the winter? Or do you all shut them off? I really need the extra space so it has to be an year round thing. My budget is small though. Any suggestions or recommendations?

Yes there have been several links on here - do a quick search. I think the floor type is the thing that makes it feel cold. We have laminate floor so in winter -put rugs down. We put an oil fired heater in there & it does warm up quickly. If you are in the Northwest, I can recommend a company.

Ours is freezing in winter. Think partly because it faces North, partly because it doesn't have those little brick walls that go up to window height - it's wooden all the way up. Was here when we bought the house. Rugs are an interesting idea, thanks WW, will see if that makes a difference.

We do have an electric heater but it would cost an arm and a leg to run it all day.

We have an air conditioning unit in there that is also a heater in the winter, it wasn't cheap but as our conservatory also faces north it was something that we thought would be essential if we wanted to use it all year round - and we do, it's a grteat extra TV room/playroom at the moment - and the double glazed interior doors are great at blocking out 'children noise'
Oh and lots of rubber backed cheap rugs keeps it fairly warm as WW suggested!

We are just north of London and the conservatory would face east with protection from the wind either side.

I've always shied away from the idea - all that glass to clean!

Having one started on the 14th November. It is going to be 5m x 3m and I am definitely going to be using it all year round. Mine will have brick walls either side though as we are mid terraced so that should keep it a bit warmer.
