selling a slightly battered VW Golf - should we sell it privately or to a dealer?

When I say battered I mean it has a small scrape on the driver's door and the fabric of the interior has seen much better days (ie it has had small children doing long journeys on it for several years!).
I'm worried that if we try to sell it through autotrader or somewhere like that poeple will turn up to see it and be put off by the imperfections, but i don't want to put an advert in saying that is "slightly battered"- do people do that?!
So if we take it to a dealer they will see everything thats wrong with it and give us a price straight off - but will we get less for it that way?
Somehow we have managed to sell all our previous cars to friends or family so not had much experience of this! Thanks.
pps the car is 10 years old and had been a great runner! Smile

ps any comments on the best MPV to replace it also gratefully received!

My DH is motor trade, most trade ins go to auction. Best thing to do is go to a few dealers and get quotes.

Sometimes the dealerships are given money to prop deals up, so they might give you £1000 extra on the trade in out of this budget. Which is why trade in quotes can vary so much.

You just need to drop on a main dealer who's a couple of deals away from target.

Sorry no idea on people carriers.

just watch with trade ins though, as often you get as much off the car with no trade in as you do with a trade in,
last time we bought a car, they asked about a trade in,offered us £1000 for our car,we didnt take it as i wanted to keep it as a second car. they ended up taking £1500 off the price on the window anyway!!!!

so we kept our old car and still got £1500 off!
a friend has just had the exact same experience, she sold her old car to a friend and got really good money off her new car!
