Asda Product recall, not off shelves should I complain?

In the classy paper the 'Metro' yesterday there was a small bit about Asda recalling it's flip top baby beaker. I went in there today (silly me forgetting to take the beaker with me) and was shocked to see them still out on the shelves. I went to customer services and asked about them, showed them the beaker, at which point a 'suit' of some description was buying some goods. The girl behind the till asked him if he knew anything about this.

As it was, he didn't. The general consensus was that I must have it wrong (obviously I was aware that the article might have been incorrect or that it was a different beaker). The suitey chap was very nice and said he would look it up and if I wanted to come back in tomorrow he would know if it was this product or not. A woman who worked on that department was also asked, and looked at the front page of a folder and flipped through the rest of the pages (ie, not really looking at all) and couldn't have been less 'bovvered' or more dissinterested if she tried.

It was explained to me that the 'product recall team' was away at this time, which was the reason behind their uncertainty. If I could come back with the paper the next day?

However, after queing and paying for my goods, the chap was waiting for me, to say, actually, yes it was that same item. I said that I would bring it back for a refund, and he said, 'Yes, I mean, have you got your receipt?' I brought this beaker a while ago, and even I know that I should not have to have this in this instance. Especially as I have gone to the bother of checking that it is my actual beaker.

The reason the beaker has been recalled is because a washer may apparently come loose and pose a choking hazard. It is a George flip top twin handle baby beaker and is as the tommy tippee type is. It comes in two tone colours.

So, should I write to Asda's bosses? As, in my opinion, if a product poses a safety hazard, should there not be measures in place if the 'product recall team' are away to ensure goods are taken off the shelves? I really am quite .

  • that's appalling. DEFINITELY complain - it's being recalled for a safety issue fgs! Would they rather all the customers sued for still selling known faulty goods?!

Worth copying in your letter to Trading Standards, perhaps?

Kelly1978 · 19/10/2005 18:04

maybe the manufactoring problem has been sorted and it was only certain series that needed recalling?

FrightfullyPoshFloss · 19/10/2005 18:06

It was only in the paper yesterday. And the chap only just found the recall notice. He admitted they should be off the shelves, indeed, he said that in the time I had been queing, they already were.

oh right. complain then, I would.

Mad to ask you for a receipt!
If it's George brand, you could hardly have bought it in Mothercare, and who keeps receipts for shopping? Mad - and surely not what they are supposed to do!

Maybe he thinks I'm going to start a stealing racquet, targetting asda flip top baby beakers...

i can tell you for a fact that you do not need a receipt... UNLESS the product recall only applies to those bought before/after a certain date

I worked as head of customer services at Tommee Tippee for 3 years and dealt with all the product recalls that we had there. NEVER would we ask for any proof of purchase and a full refund/replacement was always given.
With this being one of Asdas own brand items they should have removed them off the shelf before taking the add out, however they were very slow at removing our items when we did a recall and I often had running battles with them.
I would ring Asda head office straight away and get them to deal with it as it seems like the nitwit in the shop hasn't a clue what he is talking about.

I have sent a complaint via email to Asda. My main gripe isn't about the refund (it is only 97p after all) it's just the fact that the items shouldn't have been on the shelf and you would expect the person working on customer services (ie those who issue refunds) to know about all product recalls.

The article was also in The Daily Mail. All be it very small!

I noticed last week that there was a bit of plastic sticking out from the flip bit of ds's cup, so I've been giving him his water in the other type of Asda cup instead (the no-spill one). I was going to throw them out, but I'll bring them back instead. I know that some of them I bought for £1.45 and some for 97p but I don't know how many I bought at each price. Perhaps that's why they wanted a receipt, so that they'd know which amount to refund.

Does anyone have a picture of this beaker. I think I know the one you mean and my local church has a few that they use at creche/toddler group. Ds always borrows it.

I'm surprised at Asda. Our local one is fabulous and offers fantastic customer service.

Possibly the best place for recall notices is Trading Standards where it will give you the details you might not have remembered from the newspaper. And if, like me, you never buy a newspaper and are also a supermarket tart (flit from one to another not even dependent on which way the wind is blowing) so you don't see the recall notices, it's useful to check TS and also www.food.gov.uk for food safety notices.

FrightfullyPoshFloss · 22/10/2005 00:53

netter, I'm sorry I don't. I took mine back this afternoon and managed to get my 97p refunded! It has handles to both sides and a spout that flips up like a tommy tippee one. The lid is a different colour to the main body of the beaker, I can't remember if the handles match the lid or not, sorry. The spout has a 'press down' bit which brings up the spout for drinking. Take it to your local ASda, by now surely they should have a clue.
