Went to the Cheltenham Literature Festival at the week-end with dd, and went to talks by Ian Beck and Alexander Mc Call Smith, which were brilliant. While we were there, looked around the festival tent at all the books, and came across a stand with really good magazones for children. You can't find them in any shops, but you can (and/or your school can) subscribe on the net. We got dd a sub to 'Discovery Box' magazine (for ages 8 to 12, even though she's 6, but she has reading age of 10 and prefered that one). The other two mags are for younger children, and more for stories. Discovery Box is about nature, science, etc... Very good quality paper, well presented, well written, and not full of ads! She loves it!!

Storybox looks dull to me. My dses are both under 5 and love books, but they would be bored by this - looks like it's aimed at very middle class parents. Don't like the illustrations and the colours aren't appealing.
Sorry to be negative but I think we'll stick with our books and Postman Pat and Toybox tabloids.

at you going to the Cheltenham Literature Festival. We're hoping to go next year.

FrenchSorciere · 17/10/2005 19:32

you'll love it roisin, we want to do a lot more next year, but we only live an hour away so it's easy.
Where do you live by the way?
I recommend eating the £12 lunch (2 courses and a glass of wine) at Le Petit Blanc right next to the festival tent, fab!!!

We live SW Cumbria, so it's a bit of a trek for us

We used to live in Oxfordshire, which would have been easier! Where are you?

FrenchSorciere · 17/10/2005 19:42

Bristol

you are a bit far away but it's a lovely area though

Looks the sort of thing we'd like, FS (anything with horses on the front cover is good for me )- thanks!

The magazines do look interesting. But grandma bought ds1 a subscription to Aquila for his birthday, which seems to fill the same sort of niche I think.

My ds2 is just 6, but I was told by his teacher today that he has a reading age of 11 But atm he's not keen to read anything other than his school reading book or the Beano!

bump for the day crowd
