If you are going self catering you can sterilise in any sort of plastic tub even a large tupperware box which can be used for storage while traveling using sterilising tablets, you just have to work out how many litre the tub holds.

If you will have access to a microwave there are these bags
Or there are these cold water sterilising bags .

going on a cruise so no microwave and much room for cold waer sterilising..booked b4 i was pregnant

Are you flying? Ready made milk will take up some of your baggage allowance. We took the powder and a travel kettle. Not too much hassle really. Also those sterilising bags are good.

Used to buy the pre made aptamil from large Tescos.....

ScarySkribble · 16/10/2005 21:24

If you are on a cruise you are going to be limited with time and places to get formula especially the right brand. I would take the big cartons of ready mix unless you want to make up with bottled water, which is an option to consider. The cold water bags can be hung in the wardrobe, off door hooks, on the bath taps even in the shower.
Hopefully cabin will have mini fridge and a kettle.

you can get pre sterilised disposable bottles like these

but that would be quite expensive for a whole week or so. I used them with cartons of ready made up formula for a couple of weekends away when DS1 was a baby

LIZS · 16/10/2005 21:30

We used the cold water bags on a canal boat -hung over shower taps or the sink.

ScarySkribble · 16/10/2005 21:31

If you used a tall slim tub like one for cereal you could maybe fit in three bottles at a time and won't take up too much room at side of sink or bedside table. Means you can use you normal bottles. A shollow tub makes it harder to get all the air bubbles out as bottles have to be flat.

forevermore · 17/10/2005 09:06

are the pre sterilised bottles okay to use for a week? if yes i think i'll go with that. i have worked out that she will need 5 bottles and 5 pre mixed formula cartons / 24 hours = 50 of each.

i will spread the baggage allowance over a number of family members also going...sound okay?

So if a litre of water weighs a kilo - how many kilos is that?

Tommy · 17/10/2005 09:57

the pre sterilised bottles last for ever! They are disposable.
It all sounds like a nightmare to me TBH but you have to do what you have to do I guess!
I think I would go for the travel kettle and cold watwer sterilising if it was me = otherwise - get yourself down to Boots and make sure you take your Rewards points card with you!
Good luck

You can use certian bottled water to make up bottles I think Evian is fine as is some other brands. Or contact the cruise company and find out about access to kettles/microwave etc. If it is a cruise like P&O who have kids facilities on board they will be able to help. I wouldn't bother taking 50 bottles andloads of caartons of formula. The big cartons need to be in a fridge anyway, which means you may be stuffed there. Personally I would use the cold water system, and kettle, with perhaps a few made up cartons and disposable bottles just in case. And definately find out if you can get boiling water/microwave too

bobbybob · 17/10/2005 19:35

I'd ask the cruise people - they must have struck this before.

ScarySkribble · 17/10/2005 22:33

No way would I take that many bottles, I would at least take a small tub and do 2 bottles at a time. I'd rather take large cereal tub and pack it with stuff before putting in luggage, I would check which bottled water was suitable and check i could get this for making up feeds and take the powder. Someone remind me how many feeds do you get in one tin?

forevermore · 18/10/2005 09:50

if 1l = 1kg then 50 200 ml bottles of premixed formula is 10 kg!?
what is hand baggage allowance on aircrafts?

is it because its not enrionmentally friendly why some apposed to bringing 50 disposable bottles (which say are recyclable) or just the logistics of it?

if the latter i am going with num, erous family members so will be able to spread the load!

will definetly bring the cold water sterilising tablets and a couple of bottles and a little powder, but mainly for piece of mind in case we got stranded for any reason!

OP posts:
ScarySkribble · 18/10/2005 19:59

The logistics or carrying 50 empty bottles is why I wouldn't go fo that option.

I would take a couple of the small ready made cartons and spare bottles in case of delays.

NannyL · 18/10/2005 20:05

I went on a cruise in June / July this year (with P&O) they could provide sterilisers...

we also had a kettle and the fridge was ample big enough! (thay also had baby baths . pottys even buggys avaliable)

ALL the water on the ship (including toilet water etc) was drinking water so TBH i would take a big pack of powder and borrow a sterilser (assuming the have one!)

definitely phone your cruise company.... we were unbeliavbly impresssed with P&O who provided EVERYTHING imginable for children right down to child size cutlary!
