Alfa Romeo - Range Rover - Toyota Celica

Have a R reg MR2, love it to bits, but I could do with a hatch or small estate.

Mum has a estate version of an Alfa 156 2.0 litre and says she will swap cars if i want. I really like the Alfa, it is fast and drives really well, mum has owned it for 4 years at it has been so reliable.

Been looking at Totota celicas (they are hatchbacks are they not) and they are an option

However the car I really fancy is a Range Rover, I be pushing my budget but they seem so good value now.

There is a black one for sale locally for £7500 but it has been there ages

Am I nuts for considering it?

The other possibility is to buy a cheap estate and keep the MR2

thoughts anyone please

DP used to have a Celica back in our childfree days. I hated it. Shit in any weather that isn't bone dry, and I looked like an injured beetle when trying to climb out of it. It went like shit off a shovel though, and he loved it dearly. Much roomier than similar cars though - he tried out the Hyundai coupe but couldn't fit in it!

The only thing I would say you should consider is how much extra it's going to cost in tax/insurance and petrol for the range rover.

I would love a range rover, but fear the mpg and tax would be extortionate?

C0FFEE · 05/02/2011 13:01

Oh geordieminx that is why I am questioning my sanity although I do not do that much mileage - about 6000. Maybe a slightly older one, so the road tax is cheaper.

BollocksToThis I think the Celica is not an option then.

Road tax is more expensive on old ones (i think) as the emissions are higher?

If you have the money to afford the range rover, and it's not going to bankrupt you to get it serviced/MOT'd then go for it, you sound a lot like me, I love cars, and driving fast, so car for the car you love. I used to have a Hyundai coupe 2.0 before I had ds it was lovely... Although I'm only 5"1 so had no problems getting inGrin. Have a Saab aero convertible now. Just need the good weather now.

We've gone for a Saab now the Celica days are behind us ... it's 13 years old though Grin

OK guys, your useless to me, you all should be coming up with at least 20 reasons why the Range Rover is a bad idea. :) The road tax on a 2004 Range Rover is £235 according tp Parkers Guide

By the way geordieminx, I make steady progress, just as I was taught by my driving instructor and yes I love making steady progress! :)

Love Saabs, especially the convertibles but I need a hatch.

Well I have bid for a 2001 Range Rover, and keeping my car.

I wonder how much service is.

By the way geordieminx, your taller then me.

Range Rover everytime, I have a Land Rover and DH has a Range Rover and I love it very very much. Just doing our bit for global warming!

C0FFEE · 06/02/2011 22:58

How old is your Range Rover and what are the MPG like, what are the service costs.

My husband used to be a Range Rover fan, we had three over the years. Great cruising car, very comfortable but it is like parking a van.

If you want a performance car you need a 2002 onwards model.

They can do as little as 12mpg in traffic.

I know have a Mercedes C class coupe, so much easier to live with day to day. When it is not in the workshop.

C0FFEE · 15/02/2011 16:49

I have ended up with a Range Rover Auto, an R reg one for £1700

Sadly it is white and has some scratches, but the interior is like new
