Car seat for very tall but light toddler who's outgrown group1?

Our DS is about 96cm tall but only weighs 12.8 ks. His head is now about an inch obove his car seat (an Axiss, which we love!). Group 2 starts at 15Kg, so he's far too light for it. I suppose the only answer is a group 1-2-3 seat... Can anyone recommend a good one? Or if you've been in that situation, what did you do?
Many thanks! Yours Confused

yeah yeah.

I'm not going to put DS rear facing now. Had I discovered this thread when he was 8mo, yes. I would definitely have considered it, but I cannot afford the Britas 2WE now (and it's hardly even sold in this country).

My middle ground is reclining DS as much as possible if it's anything other than a 5 min journey on congested roads. Anywhere near the motorway and he's reclined to near horizontal.

Any front/back impact will shunt him rather than flip him if he's practically horizontal.

Agree with JarethTheGoblinKing. If I'd known about the RF seats 2 years ago, yes, but I didn't and our DS loves to look at our satnav and out of the window. DS now 33 months and used to looking forward...

We'll have a look at the KiddyInfinityPro and see what our DS maks of that...
Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.

That's really helped! :)

I've just seen the p&t tott high backed booster recommended on another thread as a cheaper alternatie to the Britax TWE.
It too has a harness suitable for up to 25kg.

arfanarf · 05/02/2011 18:05

alternative, obviously. dodgy V on keyboard

sazm · 05/02/2011 18:51

the p&t doesnt look like it has much side impact protection, and theres not much of a headrest - quite disappointed actually,i love their buggy so thought the carseat would be upto the same quality - tbh if it didnt have the name on it i would have thought it was a £30 argos seat!

theres the
recaro young sport
britax evolva 1-2-3
graco nautilicious
which all use a 5 point harness upto 18kg,and the straps/headrest all go up much higher than a 9m-4y seat, once they reach 18kg, you use it with the seatbelt.

theres also the kiddy comfort (9m-12y one)
and the cybex pallas
which use the impact cushion until 18kg,then you use the seatbelt.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 06/02/2011 02:14

thanks sazm. Our seat has a harness up to 18kg, it's that DS is too tall for it already (being just 3 - how a normal sized 4 yo will ever still fit in that seat is beyond me)

but thanks :)

MummysLittleHelper · 06/02/2011 08:48

Took DS to a shop yesterday and tried him in Britax Evolva 123 and Kiddy Guardian Pro seat. Noticed the back of the Kiddy seat went a lot higher than the Britax one thus probably better for our tall DS. He'll need to get used to the design though...
Now trying to find out whether and where we can hire one for a few days to try DS in it in our car... Does anybody know anywhere we could try?
Many thanks!

Blush I've just realised how close we are to the Car Seat Center in Milton Keynes that I keep hearing about on here. Might take DS down there and see what they suggest...

sazm · 06/02/2011 10:48

with the seats i have suggested though, the harness and headrest goes up much higher than on a 9m-4y seat,so any of these would solve your problems x

JarethTheGoblinKing · 06/02/2011 13:09

oh really? Brilliant sazm, thank you

wonka · 06/02/2011 13:22

I love the cybex pallas. Problem with slight children is they can easily work their arms and then legs out of the harnes and then plonk themselves on the passanger seat next to you on the motorway (He DID). Cannot noway nohow get out of the pallas

sazm · 06/02/2011 17:48

wonka- theres a thread on here this week about a lady who bought a pallas, and is having a nightmare with it as her dd can escape from it!

BertieBotts · 06/02/2011 17:53

You can try one out at a Mamas & Papas shop - or at least their version if it.

I'd go for one of the group 123 versions, because I have the infinity pro for DS and while it's a great seat, I have already got the headrest at the highest point and he's only 2.4.

Sazm - oh no! I'll look that up, I was pretty certain they were inescapable!

sazm · 06/02/2011 19:43

hmm she has contacted mamas and papas and had no luck with them - another point about it is it needs a long seatbelt to fit in.
mamas and papas also do the solution x seat, theres a couple of different versions of it,one uses an impact cushion until 18kg as well then turns into a normal high backed booster x

wonka · 06/02/2011 23:01

The 123 need a long seat belt too I have one of these for my older one, its a wide seat and the belt weaves in and out. We had to get rid of the ones out of DH's car as they were so wide we couldn't fit all three across the back. But they are a really solid safe seat.
I thought I had a houdini baby on my hand. I can't see how she is fitting it right?
Off to have a look at that thread!
