hi
I am due 2nd baby in dec and have a little boy who was 2 yesterday. With Adam we were given a moses basket that we did use but I then gave it to someone else. I am looking at getting another one but never realised how expensive they are. Is it really worth getting one? I was thinking about the fact it is easy to manovere so what is the consenseus?

i didn't have one... we just had a little crib. luckily it was light enough for me to carry into the sitting room during the day for him to sleep in, and back into our room at night!

if we hadn't had that then i think i'd have got a moses basket too

you may be able to get one from someone on here if you don't wanna pay full whack... check out for sale board

DS never used it..and I even splurged on a new mattress after dd (who never used it either!) Both slept with us till they went in cots when a bit older. Welcome to mine if you are in/anywhere near Tooting....?

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 11/10/2005 22:48

Dont pay full whack hun - they arent in them very long!

i got mine from a friend when Jess was born and will use it again this time and then pass it on. Shame you arent due just that little bit later!

nowhere near tooting

I am going to keep an eye out on for sale boards...then just get new matress...have had a look on ebay and even seem expensive used. We have a crib for our bedroom but adam hated just being in the crib and prefered to be in the moses basket.

also have a look in your local free ads.... check out car boot sales and NCT nearly new sales

I used a wooden crib (handed down)squeezed in beside my bed and a coach built silvercross for daytime (easy to park outside) until they were in the big cot.

I wouldn't buy one myself, I would use the big cot or a pram but I suppose if I wanted them in my rrom and didn't have a crib I might, but just a cheap one as they are not in them long.

You can get them in Argos for about £30 and a pine rocking stand for £15

ScarySkribble · 11/10/2005 23:04

Meant to say that I see lots at the car boot sale everyweek.

mummymojo · 11/10/2005 23:21

I borrowed one for my first baby (just bought a new mattress). For my second baby I bought one off Ebay for £20 - used the mattress I already had and then sold back on Ebay for £20.

MrsSpoon · 11/10/2005 23:25

DS1, just used the cot, although in retrospect it was maybe a bit tough on my back, plus we lived in a flat and didn't really need the cot to be portable as we were all on the one level.

With DS2 I bought one second hand, the mattress was foam with a mesh cover and I bunged it in the washing machine, don't know how this figures with SIDS etc, but I was happy that the mattress was clean and didn't look too different to the mattresses on sale in the shops at the time.

I think it cost about £15 (maybe a little more, £25 at the most) secondhand and I got £15 back for it in the paper.

BadHair · 11/10/2005 23:26

Have to say that mine was very useful and I did get lots of use out of it, but it was given to me secondhand. I didn't really want it as I wanted ds1 to have everything new, and I had the money then to buy one, but mil was given this one by a friend so passed it on and I felt it was ungrateful to refuse.

Just sidetracking, is it possible to buy replacement covers? I looked everywhere as I wanted to change the hideous clown covers that came with it, but you seem to have buy a basket as well.

Miaou · 11/10/2005 23:30

I had mine bought for me when dd1 was born and have used it for all three now - I wouldn't have been without it, it was so useful! However I would never have paid full price for one - if you have a big baby you would hardly get any use out of it.

Ds is still in his and he is 10 weeks now! In fact we must put the cot together this week...

Nemo666 · 11/10/2005 23:33

ds was 9lb 1oz born and stayed in his for about 6wks then in the crib. it was more for the ease of moving it downstairs as with ds barging around I thought it would keep baby safer out the way. With ds i used to lay him on a bean bag or the couch downstairs..lol

I loved having dd1 in ours when she was born but we only used it for about 8wks. She started to get really grouchy in it so we set up the cot and she took to that like a dream.
I think it was the fact that she was completely enclosed when all she really wanted to do was to be able to look around.

We got a cheap one from BabiesRUs and it was great.
