DH is 25, taking last lessons, plans to take test sn.

We have 3 DC and 1 on the way.

Are looking at a 2nd hand grand scenic.

We have saved up to buy the are (about 3,000 for car)

this is a huge amount for us, we have extra for tax, insurance etc,

BUT after doing lessons, saving for car ect... we have only just looked into insurannce.

On 'go compare' the cheapest insurance is £6200 PA!!

We can't afford even half of that.

I can't believe it, we've been saving and I've been dreaming of having a car for so long, im just devestated :(

Hes a 25 year old man with 4 kids, buying a family car

not some 17 year old nobby buying some modified race car!!

Should we just give up now?!

Do you live in a high risk area?Ds has just passed his test(17) and he is paying £2000 a year on a 1.2 corsa.

TotorosOcarina · 30/01/2011 11:25

live in manchester,

im completely oblivious to all things car related. i thought it was supposed to go down at 25?? what the hell would it have been before?!

squashedfrogs · 30/01/2011 11:25

If he does a pass plus type course after passing his test this tends to bring the insurance down.

upahill · 30/01/2011 11:27

Speak to insurance people directly rather than just looking on websites.

Ask them to lower the price and ask how you can help to lower it as well.

Worth a try.

I'm very sad for you.

eviscerateyourmemory · 30/01/2011 11:27

Could you look at a car with a smaller engine - one in a lower insurance group?

TotorosOcarina · 30/01/2011 11:31

we need a 7 seater as there will be 6 of us plus 2 dogs.

i have no idea which type of car would be cheaper!

Look at Admiral, and at Direct Line.

Some insurance companies will let you take out a six or nine month policy initially and then give you some no-claims bonus so that you aren't paying that initial high rate for any longer than possible.

Your DH should also look into taking the advanced driving test as this will help to reduce his premium.

How many miles will he be driving a year? DH and I have limited milage policies on both our cars. He only uses his car for commuting, and I use mine relatively little during the week and it is our family car. By specifying the milage we do we save ourselves I think about 13% on our policy.

ruddynorah · 30/01/2011 11:36

That is a huge car for a new driver. Most people start with a small 1l engine and work up with their no claims. It's normal for new driver insurance to cost more than their first car.

eviscerateyourmemory · 30/01/2011 11:37

There are smaller 7 seaters - the ones with the seats that fold out rather than the ones with big fixed seats, IYKWIM. They might be in a smaller insurance group?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 30/01/2011 11:37

I would find a broker rather than a website.

The Grand Scenic starts at insurance group 5 and goes up to 10 depending on the model and specification. There may well be something of a similar size that you could insure more cheaply, but you need to talk to someone who in an expert in this.

I agree with using a broker. Also work out exactly what cover is needed, compare fully comp to 3rd party. Make sure the broker is aware of where the car is stored - have you got a garage, that can lower the premium. Also make sure the insurance is for Named Driver Only.

ISNT · 30/01/2011 11:51

mrspickles I had that insurance - they didn't check how fast you were going or anything they just used the data to see how far you travelled and on what type of roads and at what time and it was pay as you go. I was extremely low mileage so it was great, amazingly cheap. It got cancelled though - they got about 1/10th of the takeup that they had thought they would. It was a real shame. A lot of people are suspicious of being "spied on" but there were assurances that the only time they would look at data for speed / hand to the police was if there had been a fatal collision ie extreme circs. Real shame it was a great product. I hope another company decides to try it.

OP I have no idea what the answer is sorry Sad

ruddynorah · 30/01/2011 11:55

How are you managing now? No car? Do you drive? You need to start with a small car and work up. Yes it means you can't all go out together but that's what you do for the ling term. I started with an old clio and 10 years later I have a cmax. Insurance is £24 a month and I'm 30.

DilysPrice · 30/01/2011 11:55

If OP has a licence adding her on the insurance as a named driver might help (because she's female).
Keep trying OP, that does sound much too much for a married 25 year old, you should be able to do better and do try a broker.

thebountymuncher · 30/01/2011 11:57

I passed my test in november and mine is £1300 on a 2.0 megane (silly engine for a new driver I know, but heart won head!)
I'm with Diamond.

XH recommended a 10 month bonus accelerator but I didn't take it- think it would have been cheaper though.

Your quote seems very high, have you tried moneysupermarket?

Hope you find a more reasonable one soon!

DilysPrice · 30/01/2011 11:57

Also see whether keeping it off street would make a big difference, in which case you could investigate hiring a council garage (surprisingly affordable in some places).

TotorosOcarina · 30/01/2011 11:58

I don't drive.

Ruddy we get the bus everywhere and get shopping on line but am sick of it.

If we had started 10 years ago the insurance would have been just as bead as DH would ahve just been out of school.

We thought waiting until he was 25 would make it cheaper.

The whole POINT of us having a car is so we can go in it, what would be the point of buying a car that we can't go out in?!

OP posts:
TotorosOcarina · 30/01/2011 11:59

We do have a drive, that was asked on quotes.

OP posts:
KatyMac · 30/01/2011 12:00

You would fit in a fiat multipla (I think that's what it's called)

TotorosOcarina · 30/01/2011 12:00

Sorry uddy, but am just really upset that after years of imagining having a car we have actually got 90% there and now it seems like its not going to be possible.

And I know you are being pravctical and saying 'this is how you can slowly build up'

but at the end of the day we are a large family, we need 7 seats and buying a clio isn't going to help us and im just fed up and upset.

OP posts:
ruddynorah · 30/01/2011 12:02

It's not waiting til you're 25 that makes it cheaper, its driving from 17 to 25 with no claims that makes it cheaper. The quote is very high, but it will still be high on.such a big car.

To make it cheaper down the line he needs to start with a small old car and build up.
