4x4 that doesn't look huge and scary - any ideas please?

Currently driving a Vauxhall Meriva, which is the most brilliant car for inside space. Because of the flexible rear seats there's loads of room for the children, plus trays, nets, cup-holders for them etc.

But having struggled in the snowy weather, I'm thinking of changing to a 4x4 for next winter. But lots of them look quite threatening and big, which I don't really like. So far I've seen (online) the Honda CR-V and the Land Rover Freelander which look about the right size. HOWEVER, as I can only afford max £7K it means I have to go for an older model and I'm not sure if they have flexible rear seating etc.

I'd be really grateful if any owners of these could tell me what they're like and also if anyone has any recommendations for good 4x4s.

Thanks in advance.

BTW I really love my Meriva, so if you're thinking of buying one then do, they're great. Just not so good if you live in the depths of rural East Anglia in the winter!

The Skoda Yeti looks neat and got a v good review on Top Gear and elsewhere.

Just remember that 4x4s don't brake any better on ice, and skid on stopping the same. The AA said you are less likely to get stuck, but no less likely to skid in a 4x4.

Absolutely LOVE and recommend my Nissan X-Trail... drives (and parks) like a car, can be two wheel drive for economy in the summer, has got me through horrendous snow 2 years running, seats five plus 3 dogs, yearly service is cheaper than most, never puts a foot wrong, and gives me great visibility (I am 5'5"). I had a Honda CR-V before and this is much better, easier to drive, well engineered and well equipped. Fantastic.

Thanks both. I agree the Yeti looks perfect, but unfortunately is about £15K more than I have to spend Sad. Will definitely give the X-Trail a look. thanks.

The older Freelanders didn't have the best record for reliability and servicing could be expensive.

What about the Toyota RAV4? They've been made for years so there's a large number to choose from.

Or maybe the Subaru Forester?
