I'm posting this post on behalf of my little sis - she has decided to buy a changing table for nursery but wants advice as to which is the best to buy with regards to style, she's seen two options -

  1. we're you change the baby facing you.
  2. we're the baby lays side ways to you.

Any opions / adivce greatly apreciated as i never had one for dd.

Change on the floor safer and cheaper, who wants to go to the nursery every time there's a dirty nappy (and there will be heaps initially).

Surely they can both face either way, or is it that the pockets for the wipes etc are either on the end or the side?

facing forward

faces side ways

I loved my changing table as I'd had a c section and found it very difficult to bend. Kept it in our bedroom for the first few months. This time (second baby) I know I'm going to havae to the majority of nappy changing downstairs so it won't be as much use. Mine could go either way and I used it sideways with the nappy stuff on the feet end (the right). Never occured to me to put it the other way round!

I have a facing forwards one from ikea, not the link you showed but similar. its very clever as the whole changing bit unscrews, lifts off and it turns into a 'white and wood' bookcase/shelves with baskets. I wouldnt of been without it once baby was a few months old tbh...in our house changing on the floor involves a wrestling match to stop them escaping.
just starting to not use it so much for 2yr old, but have new baby due dec so moving it to nursery for then! its all a matter of personal preference -facing which way- but do like the ones you can use as another bit of furniture later on. makes more sense moneywise.

we had an ikea one where the baby lay facing me. i found it impossible to do it sideways!

With ds I just used a mat on floor or low bed but was given a white Ikea unit on which dd faced towards you and found it very useful. Thinks sideways would be a bit awkward personally.

Also had one of the cot top units which we hardly used in the end as were given the table soon after but is good if space is limited or for use at g-parents' house.

I used an Ikea Ivar desk combination that I already had plus a changing mat. It meant it was fully height adjustable and I could have it at exactly the right height for me. Saved my back!

Much preferred the "feet to parent" layout - always felt awkward with the side on set up you tend to get in baby changing facilities.

Fairydust We've just bought the Ikea one in your link and I think it is absolutely fab. Especially as it converts to a bookshelf later on - it really doesn't look like nursery furniture whereas the sidechanger has no other use (unless you stick wheels on it & take it outside to use as a food trolley for Barbecues lol!)
Used the floor with DD (not good with backache/stitches etc) and hated the sideways changers when that seemed to be in shop changing rooms. HTH
