£1000 to buy a used car big enough for family of 5, what would you reccomend (apart from the bus LOL)

We may be able to borrow £1000 to get a new car (possibly £1400 if you add on old cars value), but obviously that isn't going to by an awful lot.

What we want is something reliable, big enough for family of 5 with 3 kids in booster seats.

Also has to be 1.4 or less so we get the cheap tax and insurance.

Have had a quick look on Auto trader but am getting no where fast really.

Saw some Hyundai accents, that had lowish mileage and a good price, but are they any good ??

my m8 who knows cars say the Nissan Almera is a goodun. Cheap. Reliable. Fits in your budget.

nutcackle · 07/10/2005 21:26

We do know someone who has one yeah but tbh he did say it is heavy on the juice (as meggymoo has), and i think he has had to do a bit of work on his too.

i would still recommend the mondeo then. my estate was a 1.8 and was pretty good on fuel, about £35 -£40 to fill up and then would last me for approx 2 weeks minimum, just on the school runs and to work, town etc (work only about a 5 minute drive and only drive as had to drop kids of on other side of town)

misdee · 07/10/2005 21:28

nissan almera/primera. the primeras have bigger boots. we had one and it was great. but got re-possessed a few years back.

gingerbear · 07/10/2005 21:30

hello nutty, hello hub, was just going to say that Almeras are good value 2nd hand.

hi meggymoo. Did I ever get you that piccie of dd in your dress ?

oursdegingembre: been keeping a low profile and spending time with dd in the real world, LOL... stuf to do on the house, stuff to do in the garden, electronic wizardry to sort, just helped manage the submission for a small garden for chelsea too. Been a busy lad. .

twinsetandpearls · 07/10/2005 21:37

We have an M reg Nissan Primera which we paid £1000 has done us proud and is very economical to run.

nutcackle · 07/10/2005 21:37

I like Mondeos but dp's not keen.

TBH I don't care which car it is so long as it meets with requirements and is mechanically sound and reliable.

didn't like mondeos much from the outside but very comfy inside and usually have afew extras as standard as they are classed as the upper end of the market when new.

Just found a Fiat Marea R reg which has been converted to LPG runs 100 miles for £6 . Looks nice too. Bet it's gone though, they normally have on Auto Trader.

gingerbear · 07/10/2005 21:51

hub, you mean Chelsea Flowers or Footie??

Nutty, I would steer clear of old cars with LPG conversion, you need to know they have been done by Kosher garage.

nutcackle · 07/10/2005 21:53

Well my dad does LPG conversions so I would be able to check it was kosher.

ours: Chelsea Flower Show - but we haven't been accepted yet !

mm: Will send to you tomorrow by e-mail.

unicorn · 07/10/2005 22:15

anyone suggested e-bay?
we have just bought... and sold a car on e-bay... and are (so far) happy on both counts.

You can get some good deals.. but make sure you get all the info prior to bidding etc.

Good luck!

Trickorflum · 07/10/2005 22:17

Old Volvo Estate. V. reliable and go on for ever. also will keep your family alive in a bad crash unlike a disposable mondeo or something

Trickorflum · 07/10/2005 22:19

seriously, if you've got a car full of 'the future of our nation' its gotta be a toughey

WestCountryLass · 07/10/2005 22:35

I've got an Astra and it is v reliable, could you get 3 boosters in it though?
