Hi
Does anyone own the mutsy lie flat car seat? I'm looking for advice on how it fits in the car (I was given one second hand but without instructions.) And does anyone think it's any good?
Thanks to anyone who can help!

Just to say a while back WHICH? did a report on lie flat car seats (included lots but NOT jane matrix)

anyway concluded they were EXTREAMLY dangerouse and to use a more conventional group 0 (+) carrier which were much safer

(i dont know for sure if this one was included, nut the results for all the were included were shocking)

stitch · 06/10/2005 22:24

what?

NannyL · 06/10/2005 22:45

Just to clarify in the Which report June 2004 they looked at car seats which for the first (and only) time looked at carrycot style car seats

(Have to say im beyond obsessed with child car seats and with children being properly strapped in!)

Anyway ive just found what the artical said and i quote

"Our latest test show that a carrycot could be a deadly choice for protecting your baby in the car... The M&P virtually disintegrated at 40mph, It slid forward on the seat visibly distorting and, as it approched the seate dge, the cot body fractured, with on end becoming detatched as the mounting points were ripped out With a violent twist, both cot and crash test dummy were catapaulted forward and the cot body torn apart with the dummy barely held inside... we wouldnt hold much hope for baby - the crash test dummy records the forces... baby would have fractures ribs limbs and skull"

Anyway you can look at June 2004 which magazine if you like.... but the point is it showed how unsaef they were.

It concluded with "if yuo are suing a carrycot switch to best buy as soon as you can"

startingtobehalloweenylover · 06/10/2005 22:51

but a carrycot isn't the same as a lie-flat car seat

NannyL · 06/10/2005 22:54

No i know.... Honestly they WERE talking about lie flat (or carrycot style car seats)

as in lie flat car seats (but they called them carry cots.... hoenstly got the piccys in front of me...

they are purchasable car seats that lie flat!
hence they are in the car seat section!!!!

startingtobehalloweenylover · 06/10/2005 22:55

how strange. because you can also get carrycots that go in the back of the car... how confusing.

i THOUGHT (incorrectly maybe?) that they were supposed to sit up in the car but you could lie them flat when walking around?

it also refers to the "cot body"

NannyL · 06/10/2005 23:06

wow this is confusing!

Id always assumed that they lay down in the car (as they CAN do in Jane Matrix)... but the jane matrix does turn into a seat as well for when they are a little older

(personally ive never seen a lie flat car seat except for the jane matrix so dont really know.)

wonder if anyone on here can shed light on that?

(just studyed the pick in which magazine even more closely... the one they picture (where it breaks and ends up on the floor it looks like it can ONLY lie down and NOT be a seat.)

when they lie down they need the whole back seat and 2 proper seatbelts to strap in

NannyL · 06/10/2005 23:07

(maybe lie flat child 'restraint' is a better word to lie flat child 'seat')

NannyL · 06/10/2005 23:09

Also i think it shocking that sthese 'restraints' past the safety regulations and were able to be on sale here in the first place

im sure most people (naturally) assume when you a buy a car seat / child restraint they are safe (or at least about as safe as other products on the market)

ScarySkribble · 06/10/2005 23:31

This one states that it takes up 2 seats in carry cot mode so I take it, it can be used flat in transit.
Again this Matrix one refers to using 2 seats and shows it in use flat in car.

I don't know anything about them but I thought the pics might help those who havn't seen them.

anniedoll · 07/10/2005 14:12

The mutsy lie flat car seat that I have can also be put in an upright position, it looks likes if fits in a similar way to a normal baby car seat, and doesn't lie across two seats. The problem I have is when I try and fit it in the car it doesn't feel very secure, so I think I must be doing something wrong. I'll keep trying.

I wouldn't use until you have the proper instructions, I have seen so many seats fitted badly or completly wrongly, it still amazes me the amount of small stage 1 rear facing seats I see being used the other way round. (I worked in mothercare for a while).

NannyL · 07/10/2005 18:17

If a car seat is fitted properly it SHOULD 'feel' secure with no (or the smallest amount) of movement even when you pull it around hard.

Make sure you ensure it IS fitted properly before you put a baby in it.... cause if its not and theres a crash baby could die

(TBH according to which magazine? there are lots of not very safe car seats availiable which offer little protection in a crash (but do still conform to regulations)

ionaming · 07/10/2005 18:31

Hiya, I'm sure you already know this, but the Mutsy one should only be in the lie-flat postition on the buggy & not in the car (unlike the Jane one).

anniedoll · 07/10/2005 19:15

My local council do a free fit and test to make sure the right seat fits the right car, so I'm going to take it there and see whether I can use it. Thanks for all your help.

Just had a thought.... if you want the instructions why not just write to the manufacturer?

i emailed britax and had a new set of instructions for my britax renaissance within 48 hours! (completly free, even the stamp!) I simply said id lost them and wanted to be sure id fitted it correctly!

hunkerpumpkin · 07/10/2005 19:24

The Which report only referred to a Bebeconfort one (can't remember the name) and the Mamas & Papas Navetta (which was the deathtrap shown in the photos where the doll disintegrated - made me feel sick seeing that).

They'd rated the Jane one (the Matrix) highly in a previous test.

anniedoll · 07/10/2005 19:27

I emailed the manufacturer - but they're based in Holland and I haven't had any response.

OP posts:

hunker pumpkin, they have NEVER done the Jane one (i wish they would)

was looking through all the which magazines editions of the car seats since 2000, have em ALL in front of me and theyve never done the Jane. (im sure they havnt done them since 1995, but i could look in the back copies of all of those too, which are filed away in a place more difficult for me to access!)

(i personally dont NOT trust (the Jane) it in carrycot mode at all and would NEVER carry a baby in it.... i just can never make it strap in tight enough) (for my satisfaction)
