Rocking chairs for breastfeeding

ChessyEvans · 17/01/2011 10:15

Hi, I have been browsing these chairs that rock / slide to have in the nursery for breastfeeding. Does anybody have one of these and if so do you think they are worth the money? So far I have looked in mamas and papas, john lewis and mothercare - any views on these specific ones or any others that are good?

Alternatively do people think it is more sensible just to get a normal armchair?

Couldn't find a topic on this in product reviews but if there is one please feel free to redirect me!

Thanks Smile

Hi

I got one on eBay for £40 and it was worth it, it made the first two weeks when I was establishing breast feeding and spending hours and hours feeding my LO easier. You can do without and I would not buy a brand new one as they were pretty dear. I love mine and still use it. Try gumtree as well as NCT nearly new sales.

It is nice to have a chair in the nursery, but TBH you probably won't use it much for BF.

You'll most likely end up doing it on the sofa so you can watch TV / DVDs / read / be served tea and cake during the day and laying down on your bed in the night.

I had an Ikea Poang which was great for me, I did use it for BF until I reasonable I'd get a lot more rest and relaxation else ware. It's mostly been used for bedtime stories. I wish I'd just got a single bed instead.

I bought <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=i.ebayimg.com/12/!CBOWQWg!Wk~%24%28KGrHqN,!k0Ez%2BzdydSjBNGw72nI-g~~0_35.JPG&imgrefurl=cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hauck-Rocking-Chair-footstool-/130469714737&usg=__TL1X7zgQHmmoJTBWMBEbDOGZc20=&h=300&w=300&sz=16&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=DgwO0VNhqKj6FM:&tbnh=125&tbnw=127&ei=vRg0TczwFcWt8AalyYndCA&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhauck%2Brocking%2Bchairs%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26biw%3D1432%26bih%3D531%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=119&vpy=58&dur=198&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=110&ty=126&oei=vRg0TczwFcWt8AalyYndCA&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=25&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">one like this when I was expecting DD1, and the only thing I regret is not buying one with padded armrests! I loved it, and have spent many hours in it. Even now, when my DDs are all past bfeeding, they like using the chair and I still rock dd3 (2.5 yo) in it to get her sleep when she's poorly. Money well spent in my opinion.

However, I do know some people who hated them - can you try one out somewhere first?

HettyAmaretti · 17/01/2011 10:27

reasonable? realised...

I found sitting cross legged in the corner of the sofa with a big pile of cushions much easier when we were establishing BF. It was after thta that I (temporarily) moved to the nursing chair.

I didn't use it all for my second child.

Housemum · 17/01/2011 10:28

They are lovely but unless you're hoping for a big family so will be feeding babies for years I think they are expensive for what they are, and they really don't fit anywhere other than as nursery furniture. I found the ikea poang fine, the arm rests were low enough not to get in the way, and now the youngest is 3 the chair is in the living room.

ChessyEvans · 17/01/2011 10:31

Don't know why I hadn't thought of getting one second hand! That's a good idea, thanks KathMCB.

I didn't realise you could BF lying down (complete ignoramus here!) so it was more for the night feeds that I was thinking of needing it (so don't sit up in bed keeping DH awake for night feeds). When you work out that it means I'd only be using it once the baby was sleeping in its own room but not sleeping through the night, it seems a short timescale (hopefully!!) for an expensive product.

Will have a look at the Poang and your point about bedtime stories is good too Hetty - will need a chair of some kind in there then.

Oh, if you do go for the Poang, get the leather covers. I didn't have them at first and the chair quickly got quite stinky from all the milk spraying about leakage. They aren't washable Hmm and I had to replace the covers and cushions...

eeyore2 · 17/01/2011 10:33

A luxury and definitely not a necessity. But great for rocking baby to sleep, bedtime stories, soothing angry small person. When DS was tiny I used to prop my laptop up on the footstool and play DVDs / watch iPlayer during night feeds. So comfy. Very comfortable for bottle feeding as well as breast feeding and DH loved it when feeding DS expressed milk at night.

fishie · 17/01/2011 10:34

try it first. i went on ones in john lewis and found myself travel sick! mothercare used to have a low chair without arms which i wish i'd bought. i was ill last year and spent several days in a poang - i'd rather be a bit more upright for bfing although it was nice and soothing to be poorly in.

Poledra · 17/01/2011 10:35

Chessy, you can bfeed lying down but I found it difficult to master with DD1, so the chair was a godsend.

By the time poor little DD3 arrived, I just hauled her into bed with us and waved a boob in her general direction Grin

ChessyEvans · 17/01/2011 10:37

Thanks poledra that looks v similar to ones I have tried in mothercare etc (although am loving the 2nd hand prices as Kath pointed out!). I did find it comfy but just don't know how much I'd use it - and can't try it for real without stealing someone's baby!

Thanks housemum - that's my worry that I won't get much use out of it. I plan to have 2 children but I do have a younger sister so I suppose I may be able to pass it on if I found it didn't fit with other furniture.

Re the Poang, did anyone find the lack of padding on the arm rests a problem?

x posts. Yup, BF laying down is easy and really the only way for night feeds. here. Actually I did most of my feeding laying down with DC 2. A bit of extra rest never goes amiss!

irishqueen · 17/01/2011 10:42

im about to go see one with stool for £50 on gumtree. There were a few in my area> (no gazumping me)
