Steam generator irons - any good?

Hi - does anyone use these? Are they very different from an ordinary iron other than being able to iron vertically?

Hi bradsmum. I've got an old steam generator iron that was given to me by a very kind next door neighbour. It irons in the same way as an ordinary iron, but with an amazing amount of steam. I suppose you could iron vertically but I just use the ironing board as usual. The only "problem" is that the clothes become quite damp so have to be aired before putting away, so mine hang around on a clothes horse for a couple of hours. I really like it.

I really like the iron I mean, not the clothes hanging around so much!

I bought one last year and wouldn't part with it! I can do the ironing in less than half the time it used to take. Stuff does get a little damper but I've got it down to a fine art now - everything ended up soaking wet at first!

Why did you have to start this thread? I want one now!

I have one and I really rate it, would not go back to the normal type, Its fab on denim but you have to be careful with the steam, I always end up catching my belly when using the steam at least once while ironing

never heard of them but if they make ironing easier might get one... can anyone recommend one? Please?

Love mine, it's a Polti Forever , similar to this. Makes ironing really quick, IMO you get better results. Couldn't go back to an ordinary iron.

hi mancmum the one i have is this

Mrsbubsdevere · 05/10/2005 11:10

I bought one a while ago, and couldn't wait to get rid, it was a pain when it ran out of water, had to wait 20 minutes for it to cool down so that i could open the chamber, then once water is in wait another 10-15 minutes for it to reheat, and I noticed that when I had finished ironing the ironing board was soaked and there were puddles of water under the ironing board due to the excess steam.

I got rid and got a cheap one from Asda and it beats any steam generator hands down imo.

NO - I bought a top of the range one and took it back straight away - maybe I was using it wrong but the water disappeared at a rate of knots the ironing was no better, if not worse than my normal steam iron!

MrsSpoon · 05/10/2005 11:12

My old one was a bit like that Bubs, I was still happy with the ironing quality but hated waiting for it to heat/cool, the new one I have is instantly refilable and heats in only three mins, my ironing life has been transformed.

Mrsbubsdevere · 05/10/2005 11:14

Oh right, don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking them, but the one that I had was terrible, maybe it was because I got it when generators first came out, they have probably improved ten fold these days,

MrsSpoon · 05/10/2005 11:19

I am really sad, I love my iron. Have considered that if anything ever happened and my DH and I were to split up, I would have to state my case for keeping the iron.
