How do I rid the smell of wee from a mattress?

My ds1 wet the bed the other night (obviously the night I had taken his waterproof mattress protector off to wash ). Even though I soaked up the wet, his mattress now reeks of stale urine, and follow on so does his room.

How do I get rid of it? Please help

You could try covering the affected part of the mattress with bicarbonate of soda, leaving it for a few hours, then hoovering it up from the mattress. I've done this on carpets and it's worked, but I don't know whether it would work on a mattress where the wee can soak in further.

i have the answer!!!!!!!
i found this out on a website for homemade cleaning remidies. my lil boy has a potty in his room for night time wee's as the toilet is all the way down stairs. and as hes a boy and as many men do to , he dosnt have a good aim!! so my lovely carpet started getting a bit smelly, i tried vaxing it several times , getting on my hands and knees and scrubbing it but nothing .if anything the smell got worse !! so i tried the web and i found the answer...........white vinegar!! all i did was add equal quantites of warm water and white vinegar together and sloshed over the carpet ....wait an hour then vax it out! the smell takes a few days to die down but the wee had gone!!!yippee its somthing to do with the vinegar being an alkline and breaking down the acid crystals in the urine and its gets rid of the bacteria.
but you can use it on anything, its fantastic av now always got a bottle in the cupboard !!
its only about 40p from asda
good luck

Shake and Vac is noxious stuff; it makes me sneezy and wheezy and I wouldn't use it on a child's mattress in case it affected them that way too.

yea itl be fine it just might take a while to dry after youve got the mixture out of the fabric that could be a problem though but it will work i absolutely qaurentee it (cant spell! lol)
