What can I use to get rid of the smell of cat pee? And does Shake 'n Vac still exist?

We've recently moved an our traumatised cat has been taking it out on the carpets of our (rented) house . I've been scrubbing away with a solution of bicarbonate of soda, but can't seem to shift the lingering odeur de chat. Tried Febreeze, but it only seems to mask the scent temporarily. Any ideas anyone?

TIA

sprinkle a small amount of washing powder down, that usually works, its what the vets advise, it stops the cat from smelling where they have weed and doing it again.

you can still buy shake and vac from most supermarkets

spacecadet · 01/10/2005 11:37

forgot to add, then scrub gently and rinse off, dont go mad with the powder otherwise you will dissapear in a mass of bubbles

Oooh, fantastically useful replies, and so quick! Thanks all (and thanks for warning me about the bubbles, spacecadet ) I'll give that a try.

jeyes fluid is the only thing that nutralises the actual chemical in the urine apparently, everything else just masks.

we know this from experience unfortunately! cat's p!ss soaked through floorboards and into the walls in a cupboard in our newly purchased house - jeyes was only thing that worked (on the bits that we couldn't or didn't rip out!)

spidermama · 02/10/2005 21:04

It's a long story but I have ended up with a huge, nearly full bottle of 'Urine Nuetraliser'. Professional carpet cleaners use it (and sold it to me).
I don't need it any more. You can have it for nothing if you can pick it up from Brighton or London.

blackberries · 02/10/2005 22:09

Deffo (nod to RTKM ) Spacecadets washing powder - but it has to be biological and not non-bio. If the cat/(dog) can't smell it, you sure won't be able to!!

Lonelymum · 02/10/2005 22:13

I have this problem in abundance at the omment as we have two kittens who don't seem to care where they wee. I bought something from a pet shop. It is called Wash and Get Off. It is a spray that is supposed to get rid of the smell of the wee and stop your cat using that area again. It is described as a pleasant citrus smell. In fact, I almost preferred the cat wee smell! Also, it is now wearing off and the cat wee smell is back, but then, the spot I am treating was used (unbeknownst to me) as a toilet for several days so I suppose I have a hefty job before me cleaning it.

Anyway, you might like to know there are specific cleaners on the market for this kind of thing.

mrspink27 · 02/10/2005 22:19

dont use pine disenfectant as this can encourage them to do it more!!!, a friend of mine swears by white vinegar and water to blot out the mark, with a bit of bicarb sprinkled and left on the stain once it is dry. I guess if you can get specific cleaners for the job they may be more effective.

Frieda · 02/10/2005 22:43

Spidermama ? that's a really kind thought. Unfortunately (well, for the purposes of your offer - it's very nice here, really) I'm right over in the West Country, virtually in Wales, so visits to Brighton or London are distant dots on a far horizon. Do share your long story about the cat-wee terminator, though.

Thanks blackberries, teuch and mrs pink too.
I tried the washing powder trick, which was mostly effective except on a particularly bad patch in the bathroom which keeps getting damp. Problem may have been that it's non-bio - I may have to try some Arial or something. Or perhaps Jeyes fluid.

And Lonelymum - know exactly what you mean about that Get Off stuff. the man at our petshop said it was a citrussy smell, but I've never come across a fruit that smelt quite that chemically and disgusting. Yes, I think cat pee almost is preferable.

Thanks again for all your helpful replies. Cat is now hiding out somewhere in the house - no sign of here, but I put my hand down the side of the sofa this morning to find a nice crunchy poo .

Frieda, sorry, this is totally unhelpful to you, but will you allwo me to say Ichuckled with relief to read you found a poo down the sofa. Yesterday, one of my bundles of fun pooed neatly on the sheets of ds2's bed. Fortunately, ds3 told me straightaway (although he is only 2) otherwise I dread to think what might have happened when ds2 flung himself on his bed. Nice to know someone else is going through the same as me!

Lonelymum · 02/10/2005 22:48

Oh Frieda, whereabouts are you? I am just north of Bristol.

RTKMonherBroomstick · 02/10/2005 23:04

Frieda · 03/10/2005 10:46

Hi Lonelymum (just seen this) - I'm near Malmesbury in north Wilts. So not a million miles away. Haven't braved the road to Bristol yet.
