OK,for all those that fancy themselves I have two questions...

How do I get the musty smell out of the drawers of my junk shop chest of drawers? I don't want to maske with nasty cheap synthetic perfumed things.I've put some charcoal in today. Anything else shift it??

Wardrobes....which are stylish? Have an irrational loathing of modern cheapo ones (can do modern and cheap very happily, just not together).
Fancy those very plain solid oak ones that New Heights does but would be equally happy paying £50 for something out of a junk shop too.
Sister has some old 30s style ones that look pretty good.
Anything else??

chonky · 30/09/2005 21:35

Maybe a sprinkling of bicarb and then hoover it out?

auntymandy · 30/09/2005 21:45

moondog · 30/09/2005 21:55

Hmmm....New Heights, lovely. I really like an eclectic mix of furniture from junk shops/ auctions, generally all old though. I guess it depends on the age of your house?

moondog · 30/09/2005 22:17

It's brand new (not my ideal but suits our life as we are abroad a lot of the time.)

Iprefer old and battered when it comes to furniture. The Turkish girlstaying with me thinks I am barking. I dragged her round junk shops with me yesterday buying old blankets, baskets, mirrors and a sweet little school desk for dd.
She asked if I was going to paint it and nearly died when I said I liked it as it was.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall when she goes home next week and tells her family about what the British do!

We had a French girl staying with us for three weeks this summer and I hate to think what she told her parents about our 'British' ways .

I'd go for the New Heights then. I think the NH stuff will probably look better with a new house, although I'm with you on the junk shop finds. I'm seriously considering a total career change to being a charity shop asst. manager because I love junk and jumble so much

expatinscotland · 30/09/2005 22:43

Lavender oil. Rub the wood w/lavender oil.

dramaqueen72 · 30/09/2005 22:46

or if you can wash it out with actual washing powder, being careful not to make wood overly soaking, bio washing powder is fab for getting rid of smells in anything. or bicard like someone said before, made into a wet paste and washed on/off.

moondog · 01/10/2005 21:27

Thanks again.Did google musty smells and all these came up. Put bicarb of soda in each drawer last night and it's worked already!!
(Oh me and my sad little life!)

Ah, explained my wardrobes on the other thread, MD. Am afraid they fall into the modern, relatively cheapo category - not cheap, but not pricey either!

Gaaah,hope I've not offended??
I'm sure you're one of those lucky few who do style on ashoestring with no effort whatsoever??!

(Not that I'm suggesting aforementioned wardrobes are shoestring purchases, natch.)

Even more mad ning....

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 01/10/2005 22:55

No, no offence

Would happily have gorgeous solid wood, but have bank balance that is only capable of modern and relatively inexpensive

They're not really cheap (I love that the ones on display in places like Homebase are already in bits - cos that's gonna make me go "Oh, I want that one - the front falls off SO well!"), but they are considerably better than the...dare I admit it? OK...orange pine we have atm

moondog · 01/10/2005 22:58

Orange (nay, ginger) pine can be painted though and at least it's wood!

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 01/10/2005 23:00

But we don't have enough of it to fit our things in and the runners are all broken and it's scratched and has horrible fancy bits on it.

We're not binning it though (perish the thought!) - it's going to a good home

moondog · 01/10/2005 23:01

What home then?

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 01/10/2005 23:53

Either in-laws or parents - depends who has room/wants it Then, assuming we ever manage to buy a three-bed house, we will be able to furnish it instantly!

Jbck · 02/10/2005 17:26

Are you nowhere near any of the NH outlet places? It says they can have 70% discount on some items. It might be worth a try.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 03/10/2005 09:08

Jbck Sorry to hijack this thread (Ive posted this elsewhere to,been trying to contact you!) but I see you have just been to Playa Blanca with kiddies.

I am off there on Thurs with three kids.Is there anything on in the evenings? We are staying in a private rented villa.

Been going to Puerto Del Carmen for 12 years and never stayed at PB.Went for day when over last April but hoping lots to do with the children (6,4 and 2)

Thanks
