Dd2's friends mum asked me earlier if I knew anyone that wanted a wardrobe and dressing table. I said yes me as we don't have any bedrooom furniture at all.

I asked her how much and what it's like and she said £30 for the two and that it was Stag, dark wood and in really good condition.

It was her aunts (who died), so now i'm a bit worried i'll hate it. Will have it anyway, cos i've said i will now and we are desperate for stuff, but just wondered if anyone had an opinion on it.

I don't like dark wood that much (just my opinion ) - but you could always strip it and then paint it or lime wax it. Limed oak looks great.

No i don't like dark wood either really but thought £30 for the 2 was too good to pass up. We are currently using plastic boxes for underwear and shekves for clothes.

Oh well so long as i can hang stuff in it it will do until we can afford some more i spose.

Stag was a really good make so it will be good quality but traditionla style . My parents used to have a dark suite called Stag Minstrel which looks like this

We had some in the first flat I rented. It was good quality but very dark. Not sure whether it would be possible to sand it, it may only be veneer on solid wood panels, but you could probably prime and paint it cream or white and change the handles (gold rings).

NomDePlume · 30/09/2005 17:08

Like the others have said, Stag is great quality but very dated looking. You could give it a facelift, I'm sure. For £30 you can't really go wrong IMO. It'd certainly last longer than a flat pack set from Argos that'd cost you 3 or 4 times that !

we have stag bedroom furniture, and whilst it may look traditional, who cares? weve had it for nine years and counting, and so far hasnt aged at all. looks almost as good as when we first got it. if they still sold it, i would buy the kids bedroom stuff as well.
ds1 was bought ikea stuff when he was three. he's eight now and we have had to throw it all out a few years ago. thrown out a sofa bed which lasted about three yearsish, not ikea though.
if you dont want it, can i have it?

Jbck · 30/09/2005 18:44

Why not strip it & add modern handles. It is really well made solid stuff so should last you a while & you should be able to do quite a bit fairly easily to tart it up a bit.

janeybops · 30/09/2005 18:48

Stag is supposed to be expensive and good quality - that is according to my mum.

fairydust · 30/09/2005 22:38

when you get round to decorating the rest of the room keeps it all plain and natural and the wardrobe with then compliment the scheme

nutcackle · 04/10/2005 13:08

Just to let you all know that we got the wardrobe and dressing table and considering I don't like dark wood i'm really pleased with it, looks very exspensive and posh LOL.

Plus have checked ebay and it will have good resale value i think as it is in great condition.

fairydust · 04/10/2005 13:33

erm what you doing here

BaronessJewelsofToochester · 04/10/2005 13:36

we bought a Stag dining table and chairs in the early 70's and we had it for about 20 odd years - its good stuff but ours was a lighter colour. Not really keen on the dark stuff but is you need bedroom furniture sounds great!

suedonim · 04/10/2005 15:36

We have Stag furniture and if you like a traditional look, it's fantastic. Ours is 25yrs old now and could be put back into the showroom. It's outlasted everything else we've bought, over the years, and I can't imagine it will ever need replacing!

nutcackle · 04/10/2005 15:38

Sshhh Fd, no one had noticed

I am really pleased with it, have given it a polish and put some clothes away. Am going to get a nice frame for a piccie of the kids to go on the dressing table.

iota · 04/10/2005 15:57

we have Stag Minstrel in the living rm and dining rm - still looks great after 12 yrs...
and at those prices I wouldn't want to replace it in a hurry
