Cheapest way to revamp a kitchen ??

Our kitchen is ok, functional (just) but boring, not to my taste at all and lacks cupboard space.

We cannot afford a new kitchen but I am desperate to make it look nicer than it does.

Is it exspensive to get new work tops usually ??

Was thinking of new worktops, doors and extra cupbaords if poss.

Any other ideas ??

New handles for the units (couple of quid each at B&Q)? Paint the units?

gigglinggoblin · 28/09/2005 21:44

we have just ordered some pine style cupboard doors from b&q website, they are currently 70% off. they are not my taste but we are selling the house and its a huge improvememtn on the mismatched doors we currently have. they have a few styles on offer

I don't know if these are of any help:

Just Doors

Re-tiling the splashback can make a big difference too.

Thanks...........tiles had forgotten about those, could definatly change those.

Also boilers , can i but a cupboard round it as long as it has ventilation ??

paint the tiles white ? the International Tile Paint is much better than Ronseal...

The former covered our fruit patterned tiles very nicely !

I did up my kitchen when I 1st moved in for about £50 - £60. I painted all the dark brown wood units cream (used a surface rprimer first to get a better finish) £10 for primer £10 for paint (ish). Painted beige tiles cream using international paint £8. Painted cream walls bright blue £10. Added bright print on walls £10.

This lasted about 4 years until I spent £1000s

I've been looking at worktops lately and Ikea's are pretty cheap. I've also painted tiles which made a huge difference and used Paint and Grain to give my cupboard doors a new lease of life. Worked quite well.

Nutcracker, we revamped our kitchen two weekends ago - I painted over the existing tiles and the cupboard doors, painted the walls and ceiling. Looks great (if I say so myself!).

Ronseal and Dulux both do tile paint and mdf/chipboard paint that needs no primer underneath. Give the tiles a clean with sugar soap and lightly sand the cupboard doors. I got away with one coat on the tiles, but the cupboards needed 3 coats as they were slightly embossed.

On the floor, the existing vinyl tiles were terrible so I stuck new self-adhesive tiles on top, very easy to cut and lay.

It's a temporary measure until we can afford to knock through to the dining room and have the kitchen of my dreams!

Homebase do vinyl stickybacked stuff for worktops which works really well and is fairly easy to put on as long as you take your time and smooth out any bubbles as you lay it. Top tip though - get one with a messy pattern (I used a granite effect)so you don't see the joins!
