How Much Would You Spend On a New Kitchen?

Ours (we reckon) is at least 25 years old. We bought a new cooker, replaced the doorknobs and worktop a couple of years ago, but it's looking very tired.

we'd love to replace it, with new units etc - how much would we expect to pay? It's pretty small, 3m X 7m (approx).

What's the next step up from a B&Q job?

we got a fab kitchen from MFI -- cost about 3K with fitting tiling and new appliances etc... about he same size as yours...

IKEA also good...

We are about to have a new kitchen and ours is about 13 x 9.

For all new cupboards, tiles, flooring, a super duper cooker and a big fridge freezer it is going to cost about £10,500

spacedonkey · 28/09/2005 12:32

I had a B&Q kitchen fitted and was really pleased with it. It cost £4000 (including the cooker)

NomDePlume · 28/09/2005 12:32

You can spend anything from £1000 (or less) right up to £40,000k+ ! I would say that for an average sized, average quality kitchen, including appliances, tiling, flooring etc, I would budget about £6k. This is purely guesswork though !

You can go into any kitchen place, MFI, B&Q or wherever and take advantage of their free kitchen design service. It's basically a CAD package that will show you on a pc what your kitchen spec would be like once it is priced up. A basic estimate should be free.

I know somebody who spent £100,000!!!!!!
Somebody else has a huge, huge kitchen in a £2million property and it cost £8,000!

NomDePlume · 28/09/2005 12:42

@ £100k. My Mum had her kitchen done recently and spent £42k, I thought that was extravagant !

highlander · 28/09/2005 13:37

Hmmmm. I do fancy some of the Ikea stuff!

I dream of a proper, vented extraction hood!

Friend got hers from B&Q, paid about £4k.

We're giving ours a bit of a facelift with granite worktops & new ceramic sink, about £500(ebay, fingers crossed it's fine) & new doors from a website, probably another £400-£500.

If your basic units are fine & standard size (ours aren't) B&Q do very nice doors.

Off topic for a moment, Highlander..... Is it you that is about to embark on a Med degree ?

Bozza · 28/09/2005 13:58

3m x 7 m sounds quite big to me.

mugface · 28/09/2005 14:02

mine cost around 6000 from MFI. That included integrated fridge and freezer and dishwasher. New oven and hob etc.

ediemay · 28/09/2005 14:05

We have a big kitchen, 25' by 18' and have just finished it. Went for the Tidaholm oak kitchen from Ikea, all appliances from Comet online. Total cost including labour - just under £6K.

GeorginaA · 28/09/2005 14:07

We spent about 6k on ours from Wickes, and that was with the slightly better oven and I sourced the sink and fridge freezer separately. However, I did keep our existing washing machine and dishwasher, so I suppose that evens out!

It's worth taking measurements of the room (i.e. exactly where the doors are, etc) and wander round the various companies (DON'T invite a kitchen salesperson into your home whatever you do... particularly not Moben) - it'll give you a better idea of prices, but also a better idea of spec/design etc. Even if you love one kitchen, go see others, because different designers each have their own little tricks, and then you can come back to the original and say "no, actually, I want more drawer space there... and how about anti-slam cupboards... and different lighting there will make a huge difference..."

Oh, and don't forget to haggle Most places, if you look a bit "hmm... not sure, MFI have offered a very similar kitchen for X less" will offer you a discount of some description.

kbaby · 29/09/2005 22:15

Ageree with Georgina.
We chose our kitchen in MFI and then had a kitchen designer from some company come and design it. We prefered his design but not the cupboards and so went back to mfi with the design we wanted.
Ours will be(once extension done)6m x 3m
its costing 7k for all units, sink, oven, hob, integrated combi micro, dishwasher and washing machine.

We're getting our kitchen done at the mo and I think it's about the same size as yours. It's from Howdens (owned by MFI but deal with trade only) and I'm really impressed with the quality (Tuscany range - Toscana at MFI). The joiner hasn't put anything on top of the trade price which is £2,500 for units, worktops, sink, taps & s/steel hood. We already have the appliances. He's charging us approx £800-1000 to fit it and take down a wall.

You can get in touch with a joiner/ kitchen fitter and ask him to get the kitchen from Howdens. If he hasn't already, he just needs to open a trade account there. Then Howdens send round a kitchen designed who measures up and gives you a printed picture of the kitchen. I highly recommended them.

lucykate · 06/10/2005 21:25

ours came from mfi, £750 ish for all units, sink and tap. £150 for hob and oven from B&Q, £75 for worktops also from B&Q. steel cooker hood came from a place called stax, was about £70. we priced up the B&Q 'it' kitchens but when you add in all the hinges, handles etc you have to get seperatley it was cheaper from mfi. dh fitted it with my stepdad's help, the price from mfi for fitting was more than the actual kitchen cost.
