OK, so go look at it later. Take a note of the mileage, have a look at the condition (inspection guide here), have a test drive.

Then come home, call your dad and discuss it. You do not have to buy a car there and then (and TBH, I never do - always like to give myself some time to think). 'Tis scary though, as it's such a big purchase.

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 15/12/2010 11:35

ok glass reckons, dealer price £2270

and private sale price £1576

so not too bad then

the mileage is 121,000

true poledra

have been looking for a long time and have realised what I do not want

Trinity - that is huge mileage, DH who is a bit of a car geek says don't touch it with a bargepole at that mileage especially if you have to borrow the money. Be patient and look around, get DSS to go with you to look at them (a man's presence seems to slow them down when trying to shaft you!)

scarletbegonia · 15/12/2010 11:51

Mileage is high in absolute terms but for a car that age its only average. I wouldn't be put off by that esp as you seem to do quite low mileage.

Poledra · 15/12/2010 11:56

Agree with Scarlet - it's an 11-yo car, estimated annual mileage for a family car of 10-12.5k would mean that average mileage would be between 110-137.5k, so it's pretty much in the middle on that.

I've put 45k on a car in a year - that's high Xmas Grin

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 15/12/2010 12:03

I dont feel the mileage is a problem for that age of car at all

when you have to buy cheap you have to buy old Grin

which is why a seat, being vw and ford really is a good idea
well made, easy to fix, less expensive parts, can you tell I've been doing this for ages

really I fell in love with a citreon c8 but I'm not touching another french car ugh

dss moved back to wolves so its me or nothing

gonna take an AA inspection check list with me and look serious

the price comes up ok with glass's and our mechanic so its looking good at the mo

spoke to my dad and he feels good about it

he realises that he is a little out of the loops as the the last second hand car he bought was 12 years ago lol and they have just changed it for the first ever younger then 5 years car they have ever bought

was an ex demo steal of a car from the same dealer they have used forever so was a fab deal

but based on the glass info and the average mileage and the vw, ford thing

OP posts:
TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 15/12/2010 12:09

come back and talk to me pleeease I'm panicking

how do I look like I'm serious?

OP posts:
scarletbegonia · 15/12/2010 12:17

Taking the AA list sounds like a good idea. I have bought cars by myself in the past before children when I had money to burn Grin

If you're not sure about anything I'd just say that you've got other cars to look at and leave. You can always go back, at the moment I'd imagine its a buyers market.

The only time I made the wrong decision was when I made up my mind too quickly, just pipped another buyer at the post but wished I hadn't as car was nothing but trouble.

Take you time and good luck.

I'll be checking back tonight for an update.

Katz · 15/12/2010 12:19

ask about it's service history, has it had parts changed at the right time points based on the manufacturers recommendations. Have a look on autotrader and whatcar, see what they to look out for in a car of that age and mileage.

Katz · 15/12/2010 12:20

autotarder review here 4/5 stars

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 15/12/2010 13:30

thanks katz

ok, aware I am going to sound really silly now BUT

If I actually want to buy this car what is the MO

I mean I would have to come away and discuss money issues with my dad, he is lending it to me but is 450 miles away

do I say yes I want it and he will keep it for me?

or do I have to come away, get the money and go back and he may have sold it?

I am so useless at this

Poledra · 15/12/2010 13:38

They'll want to take a deposit, Trin, to hold the car for you. This is quite normal - you'll need to go fix up insurance etc for it too (check how much tax it has left on it). Do you have enough money to be able to put down a deposit till your dad can get the rest to you?

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 15/12/2010 13:41

hmm how much would be an ok deposit?

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 15/12/2010 13:48

trinity is there any way that your Dad could visit and take a look at it with you? that way he can check it over and be sure it's suitable AND he can do haggling.

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 15/12/2010 13:52

no yesterday, he lives in cornwall, 450 miles away

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 15/12/2010 13:55

do they not ever come up for visits?

Just thinking that if you're not 100% sure then it might be worth having another pair of eyes to look it over. and if not this one then there will always be others

alternatively do you know anyone else you could take with you who knows a bit about cars?

I have found that car sales people deal far better with a man sadly Angry

thisisyesterday · 15/12/2010 13:55

(obv not suggesting he could just pop up tomorrow!!! but at some point)

Poledra · 15/12/2010 13:56

TBH, I'm not that sure on deposits - I've been trying to remember what we put down on our last car, and I think it was 10% of the price. So that would be about £170 for this car.

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 15/12/2010 14:02

I could get 200 pounds together

I know this guy and he has sold cars to a friend of mine

Also my good male friend knows him and he (seller) knows hes my mate iyswim

not making much sense am I

If I'm lucky mum and dad may be ab;le to visit next summer holiday so really I need to try and do this myself

OP posts:
TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 15/12/2010 14:03

If I want a warranty that means I need to get him to sign sowthing to that effect dont I

so what does it need to say??

OP posts:
Poledra · 15/12/2010 14:06

I would think that the garage should have a standard warranty that they use. It'll detail what is and isn't covered under the warranty (e.g normal wear and tear not covered, like tyres). Other than that, I'm not sure - maybe someone else has more info on that.

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 15/12/2010 14:09

thanks poledra Smile

OP posts:
NorthernLurker · 15/12/2010 14:10

Why don't you ask your male friend to come with you to look at it? It sounds ok to me. I know someone with this - v good family car and the mileage is ok for that age. I think £200 should be fine for a deposit - just needs to be enough for the dealer to know you'll not walk away iyswim. Have you rung your insurers and got them to quote for it?
