Why would this kid's bed not be suitable for children under 6?

There's a children's metal bed that I like in the Next Directory that says it's unsuitable for chilren under 6. Can anyone think why this would be? They have other kid's beds that aren't saying this.

Any ideas?

If you want to have a look, type "children's metal bed" into the search bit on their Homepage and it'll appear. £74.99. (sorry I can't do links!)

only thing i can think of is

sticking head through bars
sharp edges
not suitable for fitting bed guards (?)

all guesses btw!

LIZS · 26/09/2005 21:16

Could it be the width between the uprights on the head and foot ends. There is a maximum width gap for cots which may also apply to children's beds, to avoid small heads getting stuck and associated risks, I think .

Whizzz · 26/09/2005 21:18

this one?

Yes all I can think of is head stuck through bars. Maybe there is a set standard that under 6s beds have to comply with concerning trap points.

Hulababy · 26/09/2005 21:19

Has to be the bars.

Chandra · 26/09/2005 21:21

No idea, I think that the space between the bars is big enough even for an adult to put his head in and out of it. [Puzzled emoticon]

A lot of beds of a certain height have an age restriction. Even bunk beds, Most places that sell them will have a warning of no children under 6 on the top bunk.

Its a guideline to cover their backs. I have twins and they have had bunk beds for 2 years since they were 4!

Whizzz · 26/09/2005 21:24

a-ha here you go although only states bunk beds.

tassis · 26/09/2005 21:26

Thanks all!

That's the one, Whizz.

The bar thing seems most likely, but as Chandra says they look pretty widely spaced.

They have another metal one with bars "thomas bed" that doesn't have the under 6 thing and the bars look closer together to me...

bumping this.

anyone around today who has any insight into why one chidren's bed with bars from next would be OK for under 6s and not another?

and would it stop you putting your 2.5 yo in such a bed?

TIA

have you tried calling their customer services to find out ?

QueenOfQuotes · 27/09/2005 13:30

have no idea - but yes I'd stick my 2.5yr old (well if I had one LOL) in the bed.

well I just phoned next (good idea LIZS) and they're now saying that both beds are unsuitable for under 6s despite the fact that in the Home catalogue only one is listed as being.

so it must be the bars.

think i mght just go for it anyway...

although if he does get his head stuck through the bars now I'll feel so so guilty!!

I can only think of the paint now, but I assume that if your child has outgrown the bitting stage he should be fine (besides... I think munching metal is not as pleasurable as wood )
