Hmmm i think you do have to be careful. My brother recently ordered 3 books £5 each from america but he then got charged £18 when they arrived.

nutcracker · 26/09/2005 14:41

£18 on top of the £15 i mean.

whimsy · 26/09/2005 14:42

Really, s**t. I didn't think about it at the time. How do they get away with it on Ebay then?

I think if it is posted as a gift you don't pay the customs charge.

They don't often charge but if they do it is usually just VAT, 17.5%

here
Tells you all you want to know!
I work for a shipping & forwarding company and it's amazing the number of times people phone to find out about shipping costs as they've seen something (usually in USA) that looks very cheap - but by the time shipping, duty and vat are added it's much more expensive!

Thanks everyone.

Have just called HM Revenue & customs, they told me they charge on goods over £18 (they don't include the postage) So I should be ok.
They did tell me that some company's put a higher value down on the forms for insurance purposes.
Anything over 18 and it's 17.5%
