This is driving me nuts !! I am trying to find a company that makes clothes - ie that has sewing machinists that will produce a garment to your specification = like Mike Baldwins old factory in Corrie !! But it's IMPOSSIBLE to google - it just gives me companies that make their own clothing lines...anyone help ?

go to an asian area and just get a normal tailor to do it. whereabouts are you?
possibly non asian shops do it too but i know definitely you will find it in asian areas as its quite common

Many places that do alterations can put you in touch with a dressmaker. Ask in your local haberdashers.

Try Folksy. I found someone fantastic on there that made a winter bag for me out of an old tweed skirt. She put hours of work into it for an extremely reasonable price and was so lovely. Depends if you need one-offs or a series of things, I suppose..

What do you want making? A factory with sewing machinists is only going to be interested in a production line I would have thought- i.e. multiple garments.

If you're after a single garment then you need a dressmaker or seamstress, which you should find in the yellow pages or yell.com

Hi - thanks for the replies - sorry I probably wasn't making myself clear enough - I would need a series of items made on an ongoing basis - the point is that they are very basic and simple to make, therefore I either need a recommendation of a good factory that produces garment reasonably - or a person / persons who does it on a freelance basis but would be happy to make quantities on an ongoing basis
Any ideas ? Thanks matilda will try folksy also

I know a couple of people who make things on an ongoing basis - not massive numbers, obviously. It's word of mouth, really. What about finding someone who's a sewing teacher and asking him/her if they're interested, or to put you in touch with someone who might be?
Otherwise there is a sewing forum called mysewingcircle.com - you might find someone there.

Mum1369 · 09/12/2010 12:33

Good idea - thanks, will try that
