Can you take something back without a reciept ??

Brought Dd1 a school cardy from M&S this year and tbh it's crap.

After the first day there was a thread coming out of the end of the sleeve and today I noticed that on the collar at the back there is a part where it has come unstitiched and basically it's turning into a hole.

I don't think i have the receipt so is it worth me taking it back ??

yes - the label will prove it is M&S so you should get some action on this one

compo · 21/09/2005 19:46

you could take your bank statement to prove how new it is if you paid on card

SoupDragon · 21/09/2005 19:46

You should also be OK because the item is faulty.

LIZS · 21/09/2005 19:47

If it is unfit for the purpose then take it back - it is easily identified as theirs and presumably hasn't been mistreated any more than general use.

bundle · 21/09/2005 19:47

it has to be fit for purpose and if it fell apart quickly, it clearly isn't

gigglinggoblin · 21/09/2005 19:47

i think they will also know if its recent stock. i tried to swap something evil mil bought for ds and they said i couldnt because it was last sold in the sale 3 years previously! (and the lying cow had gone on and on about some imaginary discussion she had with the woman behind the til to find out what colour they wore at his school - he was only 1 when she bought it!)

nutcracker · 21/09/2005 19:48

I did pay with my card but not sure i have a statement to prove that, will look.

I'll take it and see what they say. I would be happy with an exchange or vouchers so it's worth a try.

Yes I would. I take things back all the time.

nutcracker · 21/09/2005 19:49

It will be on my online statement, can i print that off and take that in ??

people never take any notice of me

harpsichordcarrier · 21/09/2005 20:00

yes, be confident and just state what you want. don't say - can I bring this back?? but rather - I am really very unhappy about this, only had it (x) weeks and please can I have an (exchange/credit note/whatever). is my advice.

NannyL · 21/09/2005 20:31

nutcracker... yes you CAN

and a cipy of you r online statement will be fine...

its 'faulty' so therefore you donr need prrof of purchase as such as long as you can show reasonabke that an M&S top came from M&S... well where else can it come from...

go in with a copy of your statement... explain that its faulty and youd like your money back (ie a refund to the account you paid on) thereshould be no probs at all (esp a big company like M&S) any probs ask fro mager and quoet "sale of good act 1979, goos not of reasonable quality" you WILL get a refund then!

nutcracker · 22/09/2005 17:10

Ok thanks for all the replies. It has now gone into a hole on the collar so I am taking it back tommorow, have printed out a copy of my statement to take with me too.

Will let you know how i get on.

My dhs family business was in menswear. Some of the stories about returns are hillarious. They once refunded a flat cap that had not been in stock for 12 years because it had started to let the water through (the old chap had the reciept in old money - it was only a few shillings). They also exchanged a pair of trousers because the mans dog had chewed through the leg. That is the sort of service you can expect from an old family business.

You don't need a receipt if the product is faulty. They should change it anyway.

pindy · 22/09/2005 18:20

I'm sure M&S will. Say you bought and it fitted, no problem, but after wearing once this happened. You did not keep the receipt because you thought it was ok. They will be fine, but thye will give you gift vouchers.

coldtea · 22/09/2005 18:23

As an ex employee of m&s, yes you can.

Just be aware that a lot of stores are under strict targets to keep their returns down so you may get a stroppy jobsworth!!Unfortunately there are people that deliberatly pick holes in clothes in order to get a refund, so you may get 'challenged'.

Be confident you've done nothing wrong & if you have a problem ask to see a manager!

Skribble · 22/09/2005 21:47

Leagly as it is faulty you do not need receipt, it is obvious it is their stock from label. There will be a code on the label too that will show it is recent stock. You are entitaled to a refund and do not have to accept exchange or vouchers. Info here page 4 has a handy flow chart.

BadHair · 22/09/2005 21:59

My mum bought a shirt from M&S last year, and after one wash it developed a hole. She took it back, with receipt, and M&S said that they would have to send it off to a testing lab to see if the material was faulty. She had to wait 3 weeks before the results came back, and when they did they said that the garment wasn't faulty, so M&S wouldn't refund her. They said that it was a stress tear not a fault in the fabric, and implied that my mum had done it deliberately!
My mum is quite a meek and mild sort of woman so she just went away quietly fuming, but had that been me I would have refused to budge until I had my money back. If they try this one with you, be prepared to stand your ground.

starshaker · 22/09/2005 22:04

yeah as its faulty you can and it prob has m&s on lable so yip take it back

nutcracker · 23/09/2005 13:03

Took it back this morning and they refunded my money no prob, didn't even look at my statement.

Thanks all for the advice.
