Junior beds

At what stage can you put your littl'un into one of these? DS will be 18 months when no 2 arrives and want to avoid having to buy another cot/cotbed if he is only in it for a short amount of time.
Any recommendations on where to buy a good junior bed would be most welcome. Have seen a clever extending one in IKEA - does anyone have any experience of these?

There was a discussion about this a few days ago, actually. We have the IKEA one and my daughter loves it, but now (3 years later) we are long overdue to replace the mattress which is really only suitable for light use. Apart from that it's fine!

can he climb on and off a normal bed? if he can then get one of these and get a bed guard (around £30), will last longer than a junior bed.

LucieB my dd1 was 18 months when she went into her first bed and she was really good. I had the same predicament as you, DD2 on the way and no wanting to have to get another cot. If possible try and get your DS in a bed before new baby arrives so he doesnt feel as though he is being pushed out to make way. HTH

My son had the very Ikea one you describe. They're cute but once you put both ends down its just a tray and Ikea beds and bedding are slightly oedd sizes. I don't think it was a very good mattress either. I seem to remember it was pretty cheap but we eventually had to get a single bed anyway so I'm not sure its is a real saving. I got him a second hand Taurus pine bed for £50 from the classifieds in our local paper, the mattress cost a lot more!

DS was very happy to move into one of the IKEA beds at 20 months (jumping out of cot), and I think they're great as so low to the ground and cosy, BUT the guard rail was a hazard and he gave himself a nosebleed within 10 mins, so now we have his old cot mattress on the floor alongside for when he falls out - no use in your situation!

AS the most basic IKEA cots are only about £25, why not leave your ds where he is until ready to move into a bigger bed/old enough not to fall out, put new baby into a cheap cot until your current cot is vacated, and then flog cheap cot at and NCT sale or similiar?

I got a junior bed for DS (2) from Kiddicare - website. Fantastic bed and he loves it. My sister has an extending bed from Ikea for her 2, but by the time they were big enough for it to be extended they were ready for a full size single!

we moved ds into the ikea bed at 16mnths - dd was on the way and i didn't want to leave it until she arrived and for him to feel like he was being booted out of his cot. was dreading the move but ds LOVES his bed and 6 months later he still really loves going to bed in it! we did have to put a stairgate across his door though - i was worried about him escaping into the house at night and doing himself an injury (or worse - coming in to wake me up ....) I Aagree about the mattress not being too sturdy in the long term but I still reckon this cosy wee bed is a good buy as one of the cheaper beds on the market .

sorry about typing - i'm feeding (dd - not myself )
