URGENT - new washing machine recommendations

badjelly · 08/08/2003 09:41

Well it finally happened, the washing machine has gone and died on me after 15 years. I need to buy a new one TODAY hence the urgent bit in the title.

Any recommendations or good deals around?

TIA

Check out argos, I think they have a good deal at the moment on washing machines plus free home delivery.
Dont get an indesit as the bearings go all the time(very expensive to replace)in my experience that is.

wickedstepmother · 08/08/2003 09:52

We've a great one, it's an LG 7kg one model no is WD(M)-1280F(H)D.

I have no idea about deals though. I think we paid about £400+ for ours, but I'm sure you could get a better deal.

nursie · 08/08/2003 09:59

We got ours from Comet's website- they have online deals and some have free delivery.
It's worth comparing prices with tesco.com as well, as they have their sale on at the moment.
Ours is a Hotpoint WM64 ( or something like that ), AAA rated for efficiency and has a very useful handwash programme.
I was quite excited about ours - the childlike pleasure from pressing buttons has never really gone away.

tamum · 08/08/2003 10:04

I know Dyson gets a bad press sometimes, but we've got a Dyson washing machine and it's fab. V. expensive but it takes huge loads and does them really fast.

janh · 08/08/2003 11:40

Bosch Bosch Bosch!

Try this site , badjelly - free UK delivery but I don't know how quick.

janh · 08/08/2003 11:44

Another good site

BTW did anyone notice when washer doors stopped being hinged on the right? THey're all hinged on the left now - very odd. I wish mine was on the left because it's in a cupboard and I have to keep shifting it sideways because the door won't open. (I can't move it right across because there are pipes the other side.)

metired · 08/08/2003 11:55

I have just got one of the comet auction webstite, its got a scratch of the side, but I don't care, saved around about £80, a friend who is an electrician always tells me not to go for the most expensive that does all sorts as they are most likely to go wrong, he always says stick to the basic models with a good fast spin.

Tinker · 08/08/2003 12:00

Watching this thread with interest, still haven't got round to getting mine fixed. Sadly, Indesit seems to be the only brand that fits into the space - 0.5 cm narrower than standard

janh · 08/08/2003 12:02

The cheap basic ones with manual controls are much more reliable than singing dancing electronic ones.

Tinker, sorry you haven't had yours fixed yet, have you had someone look at it?

Tinker · 08/08/2003 12:08

Not yet jan. Can see myself going down the usual route of 'learning to live with it'

zebra · 08/08/2003 12:09

TAMUM: does the Dyson seem to get the clothes very clean, though (they claim to)? How quick is "quick"? Is it very noisy? Very Large? (they look quite big in catalogs). How long have you had it? Sorry if I'm too nosy!

eyelash · 08/08/2003 13:08

I bought a Miele Premier 300 2 weeks ago to replace a Hotpoint. It is absolutely fantastic - my two ds clothes seem much cleaner. I rang around the standard retailers after John Lewis recommended this brand and managed to find it in my local electrical retailers for £490 off - from memory about £100 cheaper than Comet/Currys. They delivered it the following day, told away my old machine and plumbed this one it. Fantastic service!

GeorginaA · 08/08/2003 13:14

I love my new AEG Lavamat Turbo (a washer dryer) - very quiet and efficient. Has a handwash programme and puts in variable amounts of water depending on the load. Is a bit slow though but is one of the higher rated efficiency ones.

Katherine · 08/08/2003 13:36

Just been looking for one for my neighbour. There is an Ariston 1500 spin on the Currys website at the mo - £249 instead of £399. Looks really good and even has child safely features whatever they are. My indesit is horrible and constantly playing up. Wish it would die properly so I could get a new one. Hate the fact that if you turn it off mid prgramme then leave for 3 mins you can open the door and flood the kitchen. Wonder if this is what child safety features refers to!

tamum · 08/08/2003 13:46

Hi Zebra,

Feel free to be as nosy as you like! It does a hot wash cycle in about 1.5 hours, and takes at least double the amount of washing, I would say, compared with a standard machine. I think it does get clothes cleaner, but not dramatically. I certainly had a top that had had grease spots that I could never remove with the old machine that came out completely clean the first time I used the Dyson, but in general I would say it is only a bit cleaner. We've had one for about two years now; it had to be replaced 6 months ago because one of the bearings had gone, but it went when I had decided I would try to cram in as much as I possibly could and it was terribly overloaded. I didn't tell them that, obviously!
It is a bit bigger, but I can't work out by how much because it's not in a slot in the kitchen IYSWIM. Anything else, ask away!

tamum · 08/08/2003 13:47

Oh sorry just noticed the other question- I think it is fairly noisy but it's in a slightly barmy upstairs utility room, so I'm not really in there with it much!

badjelly · 08/08/2003 16:15

Thanks all!

Katherine - I had seen that one on tv (what did linda barker do to her hair?) but it didn't register how good it looks.

There's a retail park down the road from work so I'll nip down there in a bit and see what's around - there's 3 electric shops so I should be able to play them off against each other a bit!!

Thanks again

badjelly, you have probably bought one by now but just in case you haven't I just wanted to second the Meile, we are very pleased with ours.

RockingRosebud · 25/08/2003 18:17

Does anyone know if you can buy a slimline washing machine like you can a slimline dishwasher?

I need to fit both in side by side but don't have the fully 1200mm. If I can get both slimline I should be OK.

TIa

janh · 25/08/2003 19:03

Tinker mentioned below that she would have to get another Indesit because nothing else would fit in the space she has - 5mm narrower - does that help?

hellbell · 25/08/2003 19:10

Hi. Top loaders (not twin tubs) are way slimmer than standard washing machines, although they are more pricey.

janh · 25/08/2003 20:25

Found another one - a Tricity, 57.5 cm wide - here .

This site gives dimensions for all its machines - there are actually quite a few at 59.5 (TINKER!)

Tinker · 31/08/2003 19:27

Firmly told Jan . I'll check them out - thanks

RockingRosebud · 31/08/2003 20:38

Thanks very much

janh · 31/08/2003 20:57

Rhiannon, just discovered that this one Candy Aqua 10 is only 51cm wide - but also only takes a 3kg load...is it for the holiday cottage? If so 3kg might do.
