I've been eyeing up one of these for a while, and now they're sitting around the £100 mark I can afford to get one.

BUT

Before I do, I'd like to know the pros and cons from Kindle owners. The bits you love, and the bits you don't. Do they have a built in light for night reading, or do you have to buy extra bits? What is the average price of a book to put on them?

Hi there,

Just saw your thread. I bought one for dh which was a big gamble as he is a techy and I am certainly not!

He LOVES it - you can download books/mags or send yourself PDFs and other docs to read on there. The paper is very papery looking and it is light and small.

No built in light but you can get a cover with a light attached.

It has been a big hit!

I am getting one for Christmas

BlingLoving · 28/10/2010 08:53

I love love love love my kindle.

Did I mention that I love it?

Seriously, it' really is just like a book, but easier, lighter and more convenient.

so no, it doesn't have a built in night light as in fact, it reads exactly like a book so you can read best in bright light. This makes it much much easier on the eyes as it's not like reading on a screen but rather a page.

The price of books has come down significantly so that's great too as originally Amazon was taking the piss a little with the cost of the ebooks when they were selling the same books at half the price over on mobipocket.

I haven't experimented yet but I think the main issue is that you have to buy amazon books - you can't buy from waterstones or whatever. So far, that doesn't bother me as I love amazon and am happy with the price and service, but I can see it being irritating nonetheless.

lissieloucifer · 28/10/2010 08:55

can you access t'internet with them? I really want one.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 28/10/2010 08:59

You can Lissie but the browser is fairly pants. That said the screen is so lovely to read I tend to read blogs on it rather than the laptop (using Google reader).

You wouldn't by any chance know if you can download files from a Luxembourg IP address do you? I would love one but am just a bit worried that I won't be able to download stuff here.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 30/10/2010 08:58

Sorry, I've no idea. Why not e-mail Amazon and ask them?

mogs0 · 30/10/2010 13:58

NightFury - My Dad has recently bought one. He lives abroad for half the year and when he bought it he checked whether he'd be able to download when abroad and was assured that it would still work.

I LOVE my Kindle. I think the extra £40 for free 3G access is v much worth it. There's a coverage map on the Kindle product pages where you can see which countries are covered. Best experience, sat waiting for delayed train/plane etc, run out of stuff to read - just download a new book, often for only 3 or 4 £. On your Kindle in a couple of minutes. If you turn the wireless function off when you're not using it your battery will last for ages. brilliant. Amazon have y far the widest range of decent ebooks available and you can get free apps for your PC, iPad, iPhone, Android device etc etc so you can read the same books on lots of different devices.
Did I mentione I LOVE mine!

NightFury · 31/10/2010 18:32

Thank mogs0.

ChewyToffeeMum - I will e mail amazon - I'm also not sure how many other languages the Kindle supports and what range of books are available so I have lots of questions!

I have heard that the Kindle is not so good for non-English language books - anyone have any experience of this?
