Tumble Dryers

I'm thinking of getting one. Are they reliable? I'm also trying to decide between a vented or a condenser type one - but as I don't have an opening for a vented one I was wondering if I could get away with a condensor box as the vented dryers are consideribly cheaper. Does the condensor box really work?

we got ours second hand from the book a reconditioned one £50 (it's about 10 years old thou v big and bulky) the type with the tubey thing u stick out the window, v good v reliable, doesn't switch it's self off but apart from that it's done us ok for 2 years (still goin strong) . can't ask more for £50.00. it's hotpoint.

we have a vented dryer and its fab. It does switch off etc and is a hotpoint, god send with a toddler and the wet weather.

My condensor one has just died after lasting the grand total of 16 months. I rang someone up to get an estimate to repair it but it was way more then I felt was worthwhile. The guy on the phone said he recommended getting a vented one as in his experience the condensor ones are prone to breaking down. My new one arrived on Friday and gets vented out of the cat flap at the moment ! I've found it is much much quieter than my other one and dries it noticably faster.

We have a Hotpoint Aquarius condenser dryer under the stairs. Have had it about 2 and a half years now. The only negative to it is that I am always having to remove the condenser unit and wash the fluff out of it as this hinders the drying process - it can be a bit of a faff. Other than that I love it.

we had a vented one but had to buy a condenser when we extended our house, as there's nowhere to vent the other one.

The vented one was much better. The condenser is ok but the room it's in gets really humid and we are forever emptying the water out of it.

Is there anywhere in your house near a window that would do, ff? Doesn't have to be kitchen/utility, in fact a bedroom is a good place because then you have nice clean flat bed to sort laundry on.

I read recently that with a condensing box thing you have to freeze the water container in it before you use it? Is that right?

I would always get a vented one anyway (and look for one that does reverse tumble too, things less likely to end up in tangled lump)

I never thought of having it in the bedroom - but it's a very good idea. The only downside of having a vented one is that I would have to put the tube out of a window - which in winter would make the room very cold.

We brought a second hand one from the free ads. It cost about £30 and is a vented one.

I couldn't live without a tumble dryer - they are fantastic!!!
