Making mashed potato appliances

Hi. On a cookery course the other day I was shown a wierd looking thing (sort of like a colander with a handle) to make mashed potato. Does anyone know what this is and where I can get one? Someone also said there is another implement you can get to make mashed potato - does anyone have an idea what the alternative is? Thanks

Def a potato ricer, I got mine in tk maxx

goingbacktowork · 20/09/2010 13:14

No it isn't that. That is maybe what the "other" appliance was - the one I saw was like a metal colander with a handle that you turned round on it. Are the ricers good? Can anyone recommend a good make of one or are they all pretty much the same? Thanks

Was it a mouli?

clemetteattlee · 20/09/2010 13:20

We have a ricer, bought cheap from ebay. I bought it because of the promise that you can make mash without having to peel, but it is a bit fiddly and you can only do a bit of potato at a time, so it takes ages to do mash for a family of four...

goingbacktowork · 20/09/2010 13:27

yes that is it!

Ok so which is best? I did n't realise that with the ricer you did n't have to peel. I just want something that is going to get rid of all lumps including small ones - manual mashing does not seem to do this. I am happy to peel.

I only had a mouli to make baby food and it was a faff. I would go for a big ricer, maybe from lakeland?

So that is a thumbs down for a mouli and a ricer then. Can anyone recommend either of them or are they a waste of time?

Amazon sells the highly rated OXO ricer cheaper than Lakeland (inc delivery). Am about to buy...

I bought a river on Amazon and is brilliant. Quite large drum thing so you can rice few potatoes at once. Will have a look on Amazon in a minute see if I can find it. Can work through pan of potatoes minutes.

Ricer not river sorry. Stoopid phone keyboard.

wingandprayer · 20/09/2010 14:53

Sorry they don't appear to stock mine any more!

goingbacktowork · 20/09/2010 19:44

do you know who made it?

Well it's almost the same asthis one except mine has black rubber on the handles so you can get a good grip on it. Used it last night and was thinking of this thread as I 'power mashed' my way through pan of spud Grin
