philips SC475 baby monitor - broken
MBB · 04/08/2003 14:50
Has anyone had to have one of these repaired, and if so HOW? Its now 15 months old, so out of its warranty period and no one wants to know about it. Am really naffed off as this was top of the range at the time, cost over £100 and baby no2 is due in 8 weeks. Have contacted Philips on 0870 9009070 and was told to write in and say "this shouldn't happen to a Philips product". The tel number printed in the back of the instruction book is not recognised, and the Philips website cannot come up with a serive agent in Cambs, Norfolk, Suffolk, Herts, Lincs or London. Fed up with none existant service, and having to explain to the bloke on the phone that I'm aware I'll have to pay for the repair if only I could find someone to do it!!!!!!!!

Hmmm, this is a really naughty, cheeky way of solving your problem if it's still on the market.
Go out, buy a new one. Switch them over in the box and then take the "new one" back, with recept, for a refund. The store won't lose out -they will get their money back from Philips, who will get their faulty monitor back.
Really naughty I know, but I did this with my (Tomy) one after phoning the Helpline. They practically told me to do it!!

MBB - what's happened to yours? The connection between the power lead and the recharging cradle on ours is playing up and sometimes its alarm goes off in the night when the batteries have run down because no connection was being made. I'd be interested to know if it's the same thing. I still think it's the best, clearest and most private on the market, having heard the rest of the street on our Tomy. The parents' unit also fell into a cup of tea the other week, but survived after a dry off with tissues and a hairdryer (once I had opened it up).

You could buy a new one on ebay if all else fails for £60

Bearinthebigbluehouse - that's exactly it! Also, putting in normal batteries makes no difference (and would be v expensive option anyway). Am v impressed by cas1968's suggestion! Cheers

MBB - I spoke to them today - a completely useless customer care goon said that they could send their recommended service agent out to have a look at it for £55 call out!!!!! Yeah right. I can't find the receipt so don't know if I'm still within the warranty period, but even so, it shouldn't be knackered in less than 18 months, should it? I'm going to have to write to HO and take it up with someone else - what a waste of time. Haven't the balls to try cas1968's suggestion

MBB - found the receipt!! Less than 12months old so straight back to Mothercare and asked for an exchange - they acted as if this was happening a lot with these monitors right now - "we're authorised to do a direct swap" kind of thing, so now have the new model, which, surprise surprise, has slightly altered connections at the end of the power lead to ensure a tighter and more secure fit. Felt good about it all day, until I set it up to go this evening and realised it's more complicated than it was before, d'oh! But all working swimingly now. If you have had it less than 12 months and can prove it or blag it - go for an exchange, if not hassle Philips and say you know this is happening a lot and it's not acceptable. HTH
