trail-gator bars for bikes - any good?

Deciding between these and tag-a-long - any views?

I don't know what the Tag-A-Long is, but I have a trail gator.

It was alright, we have a childback tandem now which is obviously going to be better (more secure, faster to cycle), but the T'Gator is pretty good for occasional rides. We used it a lot last summer, rides of 6-20 miles R'Trip.

DH uses a Trailgator with DS1 (aged 6) and we really like it, we usually cycle on cycle paths and DS1 cycles part of the way himself (10 to 20 round trips). We haven't tried a tag-a-long, is that the one that it like half a bike that attaches to the back of the adult's bike, if so we were put off that one because DS1 likes to cycle himself for as much of the time as possible, only really attaching to the back of DH's bike when tired or on the road rather than cycle track.

DS1 & DH like theirs. Seemes to be more flexible than a tag along bike. And it takes up so much less space!!

Oh good, yes that's what I thought - more flexible in that you can attach/detach child while out, plus space factor is really important! Thanks for the info

any one have a link?

Would love to go on more bike rides with ds (6), but held back a bit by dd(4) who has stabilisers. Have been considering getting a bikeseat, but think she is too big )even though she is small for age).

Maybe one of these options would do

ionaming · 05/09/2005 21:05

Ebay has quite a few both new & secondhand. Was thinking about one for DD, but might wait another year (she's just turned 4).

Wallace · 05/09/2005 21:10

thanks, will have a look

Wallace · 05/09/2005 21:18

had a look on ebay, and both types look too big for dd. For the trail gator the kids bike needs to be at least 14". I think I will wait till dd is a bit bigger, and until then I will borrow a bike seat from someone.

Forgot about that Wallace, it does make a difference, DH tried to take DS1 on his smaller bike (12" wheels) and it didn't work. Although when she's a big enough for the bigger bike if she is still using stabilisers you can get special ones to use with the Trailgator that flip up out the way when being towed and flip back down again when the child wants to ride the bike.

LIZS · 05/09/2005 21:23

We have a Tagalong and wouldn't use it before 5. Think it is good for building up confidence in a nervous child, to help feel the point of balance and teach road sense. The attachment bar folds for sotrage so no bigger than 1/2 a bike. Does a Trailgator work if your child still needed stabilisers to ride alone ?

MrsSpoon · 05/09/2005 21:25

LIZS, you have to buy stabilisers that flip up and down (you can buy them from the same people who make the Trail-gator, don't know if anyone else sells them). The stabilisers need to be up when the child is being towed on the back of the adult's bike.

Wallace · 05/09/2005 21:26

That sounds handy with the flippy up stabilisers. The trail-gator does look better than the tag along
