well naff would be anything from the Elizabeth Duke range or Tesco No Frills range and good would be a slap up meal for the parents and an offer of babysitting

Most silver nick nacks waste of time in my opinion but was chuffed with nice child sized cutlery for DD

Dh has some plain square silver cufflinks engraved with his intials that were a christening present. He treasures them and I'm hoping to persuades the PILs to buy ds some.

I bought my god-daughter a push'n'go Thomas the Tank Engine which was, in her opinion, the best christening present (she was 1). Not terribly traditional but I'll probably buy her a silver cross necklace when she is 13 and can appreciate it.

Hmm - like the cufflinks idea. Present is for a boy, btw.

dd was christened last sunday, now have three money boxes, two certificate holders and two sets of first tooth/curl boxes. also two lockets. the most original presents were the best including her first dressing gown and v tech baby walker.

if you want to go on the silver theme, how about a silver yoyo with his initials engraved?

Coathanger · 05/09/2005 10:07

My 3 DS's got one of these each when they were Christened. They are lovely and something to keep.

Coathanger · 05/09/2005 10:08

Sorry try again here we go

Coathanger · 05/09/2005 10:09

Sorry, doesn't seem to be working. Web site is www.storkandcradle.co.uk/stork

Don't get a money box! DD got 5!!

Someone on MN in the past had a great idea IMO, and if and when we ever have baby #2 I hope to use it. They asked for people, if bring a gift, to choose their favourite childhood story and bring a copy of that.

We love books, so any lovely book sets - suitable for now or in future - would be a great gift.

One of DD's god-parents got her a lovely silver napkin ring. DD loves to be able to use, now she is geting bigger, for special meals.

We bought our god-daughter a boxed set of Peter Rabbit books (Amazon do a good price) & a musical jewellery box. For a boy, how about a wooden Noah's Ark? M&S do one or letterbox have one here Noah's Ark . Or there are lots of other wooden toys on Letterbox which would make great christening gifts

dd got some lovely presents when she was Christened. A really lovely one for a girl was a musical jewellery box in a cube shape. I twirled around to the tune of twinkle twinkle little star. Was wooden with some silver plated photo slots which my sister inserted photos of dd and me & dh in.

Another great gift from Bil was a child's set of Royal doulton(I think??). Its in melamine, posh plastic:-) and is used all the time.

Other presents she has for the future such as Classic stories and also her god mother had a designer make her a really lovely necklace and bracelet set.

For an unusual gift/keepsake we scour antique shops looking for tiny silver spoons with a date stamp that will make it 100 years old in either the year they were born ? turn 18 or 21.

The thought behind it being; silver is traditional and ?you may not have been born with a silver spoon in your mouth but hope this helps you on your way? kind of thing.

My Grandfather gave my mum a silver sixpence dated the year I was born ? to be given to me on my wedding day ? I thought it was wonderful to have something so old.

tortoiseshell · 06/09/2005 13:23

A few things we got that we liked...
Complete Winnie the Pooh, Beatrix Potter, Narnia books (in one hard back copy), Thomas the Tank Engine (with old pictures, not c*appy Britt Allcroft ones), sets of the stamps of the year they were born, silver locket (we got that for dd, not so appropriate for a boy though!), candle holders, really nice Teddy. lots of ideas here

fruitful · 06/09/2005 22:18

Oh yes, dd got a Silver Jubilee coin (£5 I think) cos she was born in 2002 and ds is going to get a Battle of Trafalgar £5 coin (minted this year).

And we're going to get them both a really nice bottle of port to celebrate their 21st birthdays with, made in the year of their birth. You can't buy them till a few years later though (the port has to sit in barrels or something) so perhaps no good as a christening gift.
