Sewing Machines - does anyone know how much roughly to repair an old one?

I know pretty much zero about sewing machines.

I have a very old one - must be at least 30 yrs old.

I hardly use it, but like to know it's there for the occassional repair or if curtains need taking up etc.

Dragged it out yesterday for one of its rare jobs and it blew up! The motor went pop and smoke came out of it...oh dearSad

Is it worth getting it repaired? Will that cost mega bucks?? Or are there basic cheapy machines about these days for light/rare and basic use? I couldn't justify spending a lot one.

I had a basic cheap one and to replace broke part which was a much smaller job then yours it was about £50 and the machine cost that. The cheap ones are good for smll jobs. I had out grown mine and was using it more like a shop machine which is what the problem was.

For your purpose i would suggest a cheap £50 type one would be sufficent and that repair would probably be a lot more.

However if you are very attached, most places will give you an estimate for the cost and you can see depending on the repair center.

I'm about to have an old Singer serviced (tomorrow)

Between £50 & £50 depending upon what needs doing but mine is almost antique

Thanks so much everyone. I rang a repair place and they are saying £50 upwards. I suspect it's going to be a lot upwards. The man had never even heard of the make of mine before (HerewardConfused).

The machine weighs an absolute ton too and will be tricky to get to the repair shop.

I think I might keep an eye open for a newer good condition second hand one that I can use more easily. Mine is v difficult to manage being so enormously heavy.

Oh well, RIP old sewing machine. Might stick it on Ebay - someone might take it for parts I supposeSad

Mine had to be taken away - it could be weeks before it's fixed Sad

my first machine is now something for ds to investigate. i give it 1 week before he has completely stripped it bare in his quest to figure out how it was supposed to work. Its a fate worst then blowing up Sad Still all in the name of promoting curiosity and education Hmm
