ignorant about baby slings

Hey all,

Friends of ours have recently had their first baby and have made me a godmother - i'm thrilled about it, not having children of my own.

It's nice to have a cuddle with my goddaughter when i'm round visiting, but i find it's wrecking my back, especially as we tend to stand round in the garden chatting. I damaged my upper back in a car crash years ago and holding her even for a few minutes really hurts.

So i thought it would be nice to get a sling so i can distribute her weight a bit better, but not having kids i haven't a clue where to start. We don't have much to spend and i was surprised how expensive this can all be when i started browsing the internet.

What do people suggest would be the best place to start looking & what kinds of slings are easy for ignorant novices to use?

thanks in advance

Congratulations on becoming a godmother!

I love my Moby! Inexpensive (£35) from here

Very comfortable, basically a big long stretchy bit of material, my daughter loved it. You tie it round the baby and your body, so it always fits perfectly whatever the size of the baby. Fits on both your shoulders, so the weight is distributed evenly. Washable for when the baby dribbles or brings up a bit of milk.

Another option is the Baby Bjorn (widely available) - I didn't like it so much as the Moby but did use it a bit, especially as my daughter got a bit bigger.

I think there might be a special "slings" topic here somewhere, so you might want to post there too. lots of sling fans on here.

thanks very much for your replies & pointers. We got a sling that even i can manage to get my head around & don't worry that my goddaughter is going to slip out of.

Looking forward to doing our first group dog walk in the park when the weather cheers up: it's nice to be able to do the things we enjoyed as friends before the baby was born still (as well as the new things) and although they've got a wonderfully off-road pram/buggy/thing it was a little streached when we gave it a run through the local park's unpaved paths!
