BunnyBoo · 22/08/2005 17:45

Ok we are looking to buy a set of the baby monitors so we can be reassured while baby sleeps etc.

My questions are....

Which ones are the best (clear)

Looking for good value for money??

Any suggestions.

Thanks.

Tomy Walkabout was useless! We have now got a Phillips, which seems to be better. We use it on holidays and at the in laws. Our house is a new house and there is absolutely no risk of hearing our DS.

It might be a good idea to check what your neighbours (with kids) have got as you can end up picking up other children rather than your own.

Spoo · 22/08/2005 18:01

Sorry I meant no risk of NOT hearing!

Norash · 22/08/2005 18:03

Is this your first baby? If it is then I would wait, we bought a monitor that turned out to be a waste of money as we can here the baby wherever we are in the house.

I had tomy walkabout classic and they were excellent.

Bought them for ds1- 4 years ago and used them also for the twins who are now 19 months.

My sister now has mine for her new baby, so for £40 they are excellent and last a long long time

SleepySuzy · 22/08/2005 18:56

I had a fisher price sounds and lights, which was fab, until my next door neighbour and the neighbour opposite had their babies. I could hear their babies but not mine. I now have a Philips DECT which I bought from Ebay, it is a 'proper' digital, and is fab. Don't be fooled by some saying they are digital, they only have digital displays. Look in the Mothercare catalogue, it explains a little bit.

BunnyBoo · 22/08/2005 19:06

Thanks for all your replys i don't have any neighbours with babies so that will not be a problem. I don't want to spend silly amounts but i do want a decent monitor. i will look at the tomy walkabout classic and the digital ones on ebay.

This is not my first i have a ds who is 2.11 and i did have some with him but i picked them up at a second hand shop and they broke not long after.

That link didn't work, and I'm intrigued - was it the BT one?

BunnyBoo · 22/08/2005 19:11

Meggymoo the link did not work, sounds great thought if you could let me know what it is?

I have the Philips digital and it is superb. Small, rechargable parent unit and a base unit that can run on batteries as well as mains. Absolutely brilliant for our holiday where there was no socket in DS's bedroom in our static caravan.

My friend has one too and we can use both in the same house at the same time. The only problem is making sure we have the correct parent monitor and we're listening to the right baby!!

Hi,

We've got the BT Digital Baby Monitor Plus and it's fab!

this

You don't get any background noise unless baby moves and then it picks up. We had the Tomy Digital one to begin with but now have that at Grandparents house which was fine but the BT one is much clearer with no 'hiss' in the background.

starshaker · 22/08/2005 19:47

i have a set that we dont use would sell for £10 postage they are phillips and have very good sound quality. other wise try ebay, boots (they have some nice ones) and mothercare although u can prob get some in argos 2

gingernut · 22/08/2005 19:47

We have a Tomy Walkabout in ds1's room. It does the job perfectly well, although the parent unit is quite large if you want to wander round with it.

We also have a Philips digital which we bought when ds2 arrived. It is now broken as it was dropped. We have some friends whose Philips monitor went the same way. OK, so dropping something like that is probably a bad idea but it does seem a little fragile.

We bought a BT one to replace the broken Philips one. No probs so far (have only had it a few weeks) but we find it a bit quiet (e.g. if TV or music on can be difficult to hear which somewhat defeats the object).

TBH I'm happiest with the cheap and cheerful Tomy. OK so it might not be possible to hear ds1's breathing (we could hear ds2's on the Philips) but we can certainly hear if he cries! The people next door to us had the same monitor BTW and it wasn't a problem, we just switched chnnaels (there are lots of channels you can switch to by taking the back off the monitor and changing the setting).

Blondeinlondon · 22/08/2005 19:53

We have the BT one with the temp indicator. Very good but not cheap.

Do any of you who have given recommendations have a wireless network running in your house? Just wondering if you get interference if so?

SleepySuzy · 22/08/2005 20:25

Yes I do, and no interference from the Philips digital.

Tabs · 22/08/2005 20:36

Great - that's one of the main ones we're condidering.

What about the BT digi one - anyone able to comment on its performance with a wireless network?

SleepySuzy · 22/08/2005 20:41

My friend has the BT one, so I'll ask her if it interferes with her network when I speak to her.

bluebear · 22/08/2005 20:42

We've got a philip's digital and a wireless network - def. no interference..it's a great monitor but I also agree with the 'fragile' comments - our first one broke after 6 months, luckily mothercare gave us a replacement.
We originally had a Tomy walkabout (not digital) and it drove us demented with it's hissing (until dh went nutty at 3am one night and threw it - hence Philips arrival)

Fab - then I have a choice of 2 it seems . Thanks everyone.

Have ruled out the Tomy ones as pretty sure that that's what our friends bring with them when they bring our godson to stay, and the interference is TERRIBLE!

Mads1 · 23/08/2005 10:58

We had the philips sc475 which we had to send back because it kept losing it's connection. The shop replaced it with the sc477 which upuntil now (touch wood) is good. The wholesaler said that the sc475 has been returned alot but no problems with sc477.
