Hi, sorry I have to be quick, but I am at my Dads and have to go home to get the kids teas sorted. So if anyone has any advice I would be greatful.

A friend of mine is selling her car, a renault cllio 2002. It is VERY cheap - at least half price of other cars same age.

Sounds great doesn't it........

But it has 94.000 miles on the clock!!!!!!!!

Some people have said they wouldn't touch it, no way. Others have said that nearly new cars can go around the clock twice.

On the plus side - I know that it has been looked after, serviced regular etc.

I wouldn't do many miles if I got it - just a run around. What do you think...please??

My dad always says that you cannot just judge a car on miles as it could have done 55000 miles and something could still drop off it just after you buy it.

As long as the car is in good nick otherwise then I would go for it TBH and i think my dad would say the same.

my sister had a clio and had no end of trouble with it

But for every bad one theres probably a good one

Hattie05 · 22/08/2005 16:47

Hopefully by that many miles, it may mean its had all the expensive stuff done to it already as you say its been service well etc.

People always advise not to buy from a friend though! Who would you complain to if it fell apart as you drove it away?

saintshar · 22/08/2005 17:03

Thanks for the relplys everyone.

i am trying to think like that nutty as to be honest I really want it!

Hattie05, I wouldn't complain if anything fell apart after I bought it, though I would be obviosly gutted!

I know there is nothing obvious wrong with it, and that my friend would tell me if there was. Also I know it has had a lot of things renewed not so long ago, including the computer in the engine (I had no idea cars had computers in them!!)

Still can't make my mind up....

apart from the fact i personally wouldnt buy from a friend (or sell again) it sounds like a good car i say go for it

That is a really high mileage for a 3 year old car! We've been looking at 2001/2 cars and they seemed to be around the 30k mark. We've had a Clio in the past and are currently hoping to buy a Scenic but would say that although they are reliable, when things do go wrong on a Renault they can cost a lot to put right. Has she had it from new and has it been serviced by a Renault garage ? Could you get it independently inspected ? Has it had a MOT yet or is it due soon.

DH's last company car went back after 3 years with 140,000 on the clock - he does a minimum of 500 miles a week just commuting - it was still in fantastic nick (diesel engine though, longer lasting than petrol).

Can you check out the servicing records for what's been replaced, shar? A lot of parts need replacing around 60,000 miles I think, so you could consider it as a 30,000 mile car in terms of wear and tear on parts.

saintshar · 22/08/2005 17:24

She has had the car from new Lizs, and it has been serviced by a Renault garage.

Not sure about the MOT, but if I did buy it I would insist she put a new one on it if it is due up soon-ish.

I could check the service records JanH, that's a good idea. Though I know a lot has been replaced because I remember her telling me at the time.

That has given me some ideas - so thanks.
