Are baby swings worth the money?

I'm considering getting a baby swing (battery type) for db as I'll be home with a 17 month old and new baby and it seems like a good idea to have somewhere safe to put him/her and will give me time with dd so she doesn't feel excluded. What are your experiences? Are they a total waste of money or the best invention ever?

TIA

I used for both my DDs and found them great

pacinofan · 22/08/2005 13:40

We had one and I loved it though I agree they are expensive when you consider that they grow out of them around 9-12 months I seem to remember.

Maybe worth trying an NCT sale for a second hand one or Ebay? You may be able to pick one up in good condition, I know ours is as new and we'll certainly use it for baby no 2 before selling it on.

DS hated it - much preferred his bouncy chair with toy bar (which took up far less room too!). Luckily we got the swing second-hand.

Just got one yesterday from ebay for £11!! Fantastic condition, beautiful & clean and a huge saving on brand new.

CountessDracula · 22/08/2005 13:42

I have one you can borrow if you like

Ladymuck · 22/08/2005 13:46

For ds1 I swear this was the only way in which I got a hot meal for the first month. Ds2 just not interested, so the answer for me is depends on the baby!

Yes!!!!!

puff · 22/08/2005 22:18

Borrowed my niece's - a godsend when I had ds2, just had to be careful of ds1 (24 months at the time) swinging his brother too high!

I think a baby either loves them or hates them - can you borrow one or get one second hand?

Demented · 22/08/2005 22:20

We had one for DS2 and it was worth every penny.

Think it was £55 from kiddicare.com, used it for around 9 months and sold it for £35.

WigWamBam · 22/08/2005 22:40

Yes, yes, yes - an absolute godsend.

seb1 · 22/08/2005 22:41

They are great

CountessDracula · 23/08/2005 09:38

bibitwo if you don't want it i will put in garage!

woodpops · 23/08/2005 09:51

Yep. I didn't have one with ds as everyone kept telling me what a waste of money they were and how baby will only be in it for 2 seconds. But I brought a second had one for dd as like you I had them very close together. Ds was 16 months old when dd was born. The swing was the best thing I'd ever brought it was fab and dd loved it. I bf both ds and dd but with ds you could guarentee the minute I sat down for dinner he'd kick off so for the 1st few months I had cold dinners. Whereas with dd I used to put her in the swing as we sat down to eat and we wouldn't hear a peep out of her. I would deffinately get one.

LeahE · 23/08/2005 10:03

Depends on your baby. When around 1-4 months DS wouldn't nap anywhere else (unfortunately we didn't buy the swing until he was 2 months...) and it saved my sanity (virtually everyone I met the week after I'd bought it spontaneously said "Wow, you look so much happier/more relaxed/less tired". But I know some other babies hate them (actually, DS hated his when he was awake).

mandymac · 23/08/2005 11:23

yes Friend lent me one, and have just settled my 9 week old dd for a nap in one (and she is really hard work to settle at the moment! ). Borrow Countess Draculas (how very generous of you countess!). They are a godsend, although dd now grumbles a bit in it at first, she settles after a few minutes whinging.

whimsy · 23/08/2005 12:03

Yes, I couldn't put DS2 down for the first month, which is hard when you've got a 2year old to run round after.
It's a God send, got it from toys r us for £70. I know it seems alot but then we've not had to buy him much, as we have all the other things from DS1

Verso · 28/08/2005 08:22

Yes, yes and again YES! DD wouldn't nap at all unless I took her out for a LONG walk in the buggy (which when severely sleep-deprived was an exhausting option). Bit expensive, but worth every single penny. In fact I'm dreading her growing out of it!

Ameriscot2005 · 28/08/2005 08:24

I had one for my fifth child and thought it was great. They don't last for many months though, so it's hard to say whether they are worth the money or not.

Katemum · 28/08/2005 09:00

Depends on the baby. Didn't have one for ds although it would have been a godsend. Decided to get one for dd and she hated it. It is still like brand new, we gave up trying to get her in it after a couple of trys, couldn't put up with the screaming.
