Calling all with large babies!

Hi,
I am using mumsnet for the first time and it seems fantastic.
I have a question about baby carriers for large baby's.
My ds is 5 1/2 months old and weighs 25lbs. I have a Mothercare 3 way carrier that he can no longer use due to him having such large thighs and is too tight. Can anyone recommend a front facing carrier (not a back pack) that would be suitable?
Thanks

I didn't use a carrier so can't help, but I'm sure someone will be along fairly soon who can!

Welcome to Mumsnet, by the way

25lbs carried on your front will mess up your back .. I think you might need a back pack or one of those side slings at least

have you checked out the product recommendations from the homepage

and welcome btw

carried ds round our local common this pm in Baby Bjorn (he is 11 mnths and about 16lbs). was knackered but it wasn't that uncomfy....don't think the Bjorn spreads the weight v evenly though...maybe a Karri-me cloth one?

i would suggest that you get a back carrier instead, all my babies were big and i only managed to carry dd1 in a sling for 8 weeks, ds2 was so big, i couldnt carry him in a sling but when he was 6 months, i got a lovely chicco back carrier which even had a raincover, from vertbaudet.

sorry, typo - ds is about 26lbs, not 16!!!

gingernut · 21/08/2005 21:34

I too think you would do better to go for a backpack. It would see you through for a few years instead of, at best, a few months. We have only just stopped using ours for ds1 (who's now a fairly big 3.5 y.o.) (stopped because we now need it for ds2 who's a bit too big for the sling). We have used the backpack loads and I would really recommend them.

LouisaS · 21/08/2005 21:36

It seems from all of your comments that a back carrier would probably be my best option. I will check out the products page for some ideas.
V. big babies definately cause problems!

Thanks for your advice

Louisa, if you do a search (go to top of page and click on `search archived messages') you should be able to find some old threads about backpacks. I definitely remember contributing to a couple.

My DD is a whopper too! Have you thought about a huggababy sling?

LouisaS · 21/08/2005 22:06

I will have a look at the archives to see what I can find.
Any ideas where I can find some info on the huggaby sling?

Thanks for all of your advice. Products are a mine field for a first time mum.
I'll check the suggestions out tomorrow. Can barely keep my eyes open any longer due to a very grumpy teething little boy. Need I say anymore.....I'm sure you have all been there
Thanks again
