Plain white plates that are elegant but hard wearing?

We haven't got a huge budget, but we could stretch to something more than the Ikea ones that we have presently - which chip so easily they are driving me nuts!
Suggestions anyone?

the white range by Denby is stunning and although not the cheapest, it lasts a lifetime - my mum has had a set of Denby dinnerware for 35 years, not one chip on any of the plates. I had Denby dinner service for wedding gift, they are hard wearing enough for every day us, but stylish for entertaining too. Look for Factory outlet sales or even visit the Denby Pottery (Derbyshire) for great bargains.

Oooh, thanks - looks nice, but a little hard to tell as the pictures don't translate well online. I think I will have to see it in person. I couldn't find any prices, do you have any idea what sort of a price an ordinary plate would be? I would be willing to splash out a bit if it is something that would last us at least 5 yrs or so.

Where do you live? If its within a reasonable distance of Stoke there are loads of factory shops where you can buy just about any china/ pottery you like at discount prices. My Mum has just been there and bought a gorgeous Portmeirion dinner service at about a third of the shop prices. I think the area where they are is just called The Potteries cos its where they actually specialise in crockery. Sorry can't be more specific but I'm sure someone on here will know what I'm on about!

Well I've had an IKEA set for over 10 years which are still servicable, and I'm well clumsy. Maybe you got a dodgy batch? I never spend a lot on plates or glasses-just buy very plain ones then I don't feel bad when I smash one,as I invariably do!

i have recently bought a whole set from matalan - dinner plates, side plates, bowls, mugs etc (prices are about £1.50 for a mug)

they are plain white with a double rim round the edge, very cool (well i like them anyway!)

I bought a set a while ago from Homebase - have worn really well. I was very surprised.

That is strange Moondog - maybe I did get a dodgy batch, because every single one of them is showing either a hairline crack, or has several chips on the side. I am a klutz, so I always thought that it was me (and the fact that they were relatively cheap).

I have Ikea ones and have noticed they are awful for chipping The bowls too

I don't think its a dodgy batch they are so mas produced that there will always be some that break and chip easier than others.

I am going to treat myself to a new dinner set before Xmas but I need 6-8 place settings!!

We have white thin porcelain plates which are incredibly tough - not used everyday but even so, we've had them over 20 years and they are chip-free, unlike all the others (earthenware) after being bashed about in the dw.

muji oh - that shows porcelain under earthenware - I don't understand that!

Denby at JL - £136 for 16 piece set

We have Denby Greenwich and it's lovely. Also have a set of Ikea creamy-coloured plates and bowls, which are v hard-wearing and some bigger Ikea bowls which are shit and chip really easily. The ones that don't chip are a matt finish, the ones that do are shiny.
